Take Control of Potty Training
You're driving down the road, trying to keep your grocery list fresh in your head
. You know you need to get some eggs, some milk, some veggies, and maybe some napkins. It's hard to concentrate cause of the traffic, and all you want to do is get to the store, get the food, and get home so you can finally relax.
Suddenly you notice that smell. You know the one, the smell that lets you know that your little passenger in the back seat has a nice loaded diaper waiting for you. Now on top of all the other stuff you have to deal with, you have to find somewhere to change a diaper.
Every parent has been through this situation at least a dozen times while their child is a toddler and still struggling with potty training. Children can be obstinate, bull headed little monsters when it comes to being potty trained and this is why many parents delay it for far too long. When you let the toddler have the power, getting it back can be difficult and frustrating for even the best of parents.
We all want our children to be happy and to not have to live a stressful life. We want them to have time to play and grow on their own time. When we see our babies crying it tears at our heart so bad that we are almost as upset as they are.
However there are things that children must learn no matter how much crying and fussing it brings. Every child has to learn to brush their own teeth, clean up their room, be nice to others and to learn how to use a toilet. Potty training is a classic child versus parent battle but it doesn't have to be a struggle!
The longer your child wears a diaper the harder it will be to convince her to give them up. Diapers are a convenience for your child, it allows them to pee whereever they want and keep playing. There is no discomfort, there is no wetness, eventually they completely forget about peeing altogether and the idea of being potty trained is a hassle with no benefit in their mind.
Young children have little logical capabilities. They can't envision the benefits of being potty trained and they don't understand the costs and inconvenience that diapers bring to their parents. Toddlers learn through experience and repitition and the longer they wear diapers the more normal it will seem to them. When the parent decides it is time for the child to be potty trained, the child has already been "taught" that diapers are normal.
As parents, we have to learn to steel ourselves to the fact that our children MUST be potty trained. It is not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of the child as well. The less time a parent has to spend changing diapers, the more time they have to actually interact with the child in enjoyable activity. The less money a parent has to spend on diapers, the more they have to spend on caring for the child.
