Take Off, Aviator Style - The Origins of the Ray-Ban Aviator

Ray-Ban Aviators are often characterised by dark, often reflective lenses and were the first anti-glare glasses developed initially for pilots experiencing the harmful UV rays of the sun when in flight.

Their lenses cover an area two to three times that of the eye socket, in order to prevent harmful rays entering the eye at any angle. The design was based directly on the slanting teardrop shape and smoked-lens of flying goggles and then sold by Ray-Ban to the Army and Navy, as protective eyewear. Aside from their practical uses, Aviators also became a huge fashion accessory, partly due to their associations with heroic, daring professions. The results produce a bold look as a definitive statement of cool, to create a signature style that adds retro flair to any outfit. Aviators are characterised by slim, metal frames and flexible cable temples that hook around the ears.

The inherent character that made this design so popular still remains, even if the colours vary and the style has branched out; they still stay true to an original format that works. The Aviator style has been popular since the 1960's, where pop culture helped to catapult it from relative anonymity to stratospheric success. Aviators were given more kudos due to the numerous cult films they appeared in, including Top Gun worn by the characters of Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer and Cobra's Sylvester Stallone.

Michael Jackson was also a big fan of Ray-Ban Aviators, opting to wear them throughout his music career. The particular Ray-Ban Aviator model, the 3025 was Jackson's trademark pair, regularly appearing in them to complete a unique pop star image that epitomised Jackson's laid back mystique. The simple but elegantly designed model is dominated by large lenses and a delicate, slender frame that adds a unique combination of subtle glamour and sophistication to an internationally recognisable look.

Ray-Ban started selling Aviator sunglasses to the public a year after they were created in 1937. Still going strong decades later and available in a whole host of different coloured lenses and variations on a theme; the Aviator still exudes its original desirability, while retaining its association with action and practicality.
