If you enjoy photographing people, choose a person, or choose flowers, a tea kettle, an animal, or some sprawling landscapes.

The important thing to do is to choose something that is interesting to you and that keeps your attention. Once you choose your subject, position the person or object and choose what you want to focus on. An important question you need to ask yourself is this: What do I want the final photo to look like? What will the composition of the photo be, how much of the object will be shown, which portion will be prominent, and which portion will be most focused on. Once you determine this mental portrait, you can arrange your subject in the proper way.

Lighting is essential for every good photo. The digital camera has many options to adjust the lighting and to achieve a good photo. For example, options such as outdoor lighting, sunset, nighttime, foliage, indoor lighting, aquarium, fireworks, and a host of others that can emphasize your surroundings. Nevertheless, you cannot rely solely on the lighting settings of the camera. Instead, you must make sure that there is proper lighting around the subject and take control of that lighting. Be aware of contrast between the background and your subject. If there is a lot of light on the surface of your subject, choose darker backgrounds, and vice versa. This will help emphasize the subject that you want most prominent. Additionally, make use of the flash option in cases of extreme darkness or low light by adjusting your camera setting to have the flash button on.

Also, think creatively in regards to photography. The subject need not be in the center of the photo as traditional photos often are. Instead, try to think of a different portion of the frame that your subject might fill, to captivate and tease the eye and make your photo more interesting and unique. The button to capture is usually on the top right of the camera and holding it down will take the photo. Once the photo is taken, you can press the view button to see if the picture was satisfactory, and if so, you will be the proud photographer of a beautiful digital photo.
