Take The Pressure Off Of Selecting Your College Major

Picking the perfect college major can be very stressful and intimidated given that you may feel overwhelmed by the weight of the decision

. Although making this choice can influence your academic future, try to take the pressure off of yourself. It may be true that aspiring doctors should select specific majors to prepare them for medical school, most liberal arts degrees can easily be applied to almost any employment opportunity you wish to pursue later in life. Instead, enjoy this exciting time and the fun of picking your degree path.

One major consideration should be the type of classes offered. Does this particular school have a degree program that suits your needs? If you decide to change your major, are their plenty of other options that interest you? How difficult are the academic requirements of the school?

Next, ask questions and engage with others. If you are interested in a specific career path, for example, then try job shadowing and asking what those in the field majored in. You might also speak to an academic advisor. They will be able to provide information on how to get you to your goals through a strategically selected major. Discuss with those already in your degree program of interest to see how the program has helped them achieve their goals thus far.

Visit a career center and learn about careers. If job security is an issue for you, then do research on jobs that are expected to stay in high demand. Make yourself aware of economic trends that might influence the job market in the upcoming years. A career center employee might be able to help. In fact, there are sources available on the internet that provide job outlook information. For instance, the United States Department of Labor sends out annual reports on job outlooks for many occupations as well as overall economic outlooks. Sources like this will be very helpful.

Again, although your path may be influenced by your degree program, it does not necessarily tie you into a specific career. You will want to enjoy your classes. Therefore, make sure you are passionate and interested in the subject required for graduation. Your degree will not impact your career path as much as college experiences such as internships. One great way to set yourself apart to upcoming employers is to showcase your ability to take on exciting academic pursuits through opportunities such as study abroad programs.
