Take Your Life Back From Fibromyalgia
Dealing with the pain and fatigue that are the markers of fibromyalgia for about a decade has been the hardest challenge of my life
. My symptoms began when I was still very young, but no matter your age, it is difficult to cope with.
The biggest problem comes with the fact that this condition is still much of a mystery to modern medicine. While there are several plausible theories, and some doctors try to act with certainty on the ones they believe to be correct, there is still an array of disagreement.
So, for now, the best approach seems to be one that incorporates a variety of treatments, which includes many lifestyle adjustments.
Make sure that you exercise every day. I cannot emphasize this enough. Of course, you will want to keep from overtiring yourself or causing too much wear-and-tear on muscles and joints. That is why I highly recommend doing yoga.
Yoga is meant to stretch and relax your body. However, you should know your limits. Avoid positions that are excessively painful.
You may also want to visit with your doctor or a chiropractor about certain stretches you should perform each day. My chiropractor has given me such a list, and it serves me well when it comes to increasing my energy and ability to function each day.
Make sure you are taking a multivitamin. My doctor recommends that I take in extra Vitamins B and D to help increase my stamina during the day. Many physicians will recommend that you make changes to your diet as well, but be wary of those who try to coerce you into severely limiting what you eat.
After all, the prevalent theories today suggest that fibro is caused by overactive nerves or a deficiency in certain hormones that repair muscles during sleep. Both of these theories seem to have no connection to what a person eats. But there is, of course, no harm in trying to eat healthier and consume foods high in fiber for lasting energy.
Many of us would like to be able to pop a pill and feel better. But you may have to seek alternative methods to pain relief. Deep tissue massage and acupuncture can have surprising results if you are willing to give them a try.
I had a fear of needles (like many people), but my acupuncture regimen gave me such tremendous relief that after the first time, I was a believer. So don't be afraid to try nontraditional methods--but don't rely on them solely, either.
Above all, try to stay positive. Nothing intensifies the pain for me like stressing. It will get better, and you will take your life back.
