Takeaway Insurance – Pizza Owner Gets Banned
Takeaway Insurance Pizza Owner Gets Banned
It can only be hoped that the owner of a pizza shop in Midlands has good takeaway insurance. The Birmingham man has just been handed down a suspended sentence and banned from operating a food business
And although it's unlikely that takeaway insurance would mitigate against being repeatedly closed down by environmental health officers, most food business owners do not operate filthy premises.
It transpired in court that the takeaway owner had been closed down a total of three times by Birmingham City Council health officers. They had observed mice running in and out of the shop, and they appeared to be some of the pizza shop's most regular customers. The mice were observed feasting on chips and also visiting the kebab rotisserie.
The City's environmental health officers said it was one of the worst cases they had come across. On one visit alone, the officers discovered living and dead mice, and piles of their droppings, next to food preparation areas and cooking equipment. The same was also found on the pizza boxes. The problem was compounded by the fact that the shop was plagued by holes through which the mice could gain access from the outside.
In court one health officer reported that the pizza shop owner vehemently denied having a mouse problem, even though they both witnessed a rodent run past them.
Takeaway insurance might struggle to guard against such wanton acts of uncleanliness, but food outlets can be prey to sudden infestations of rodents, or insects through no fault of their owners which could cause a temporary shut down and loss of business. What's worst, a customer may well site such an occurrence as a reason to sue for many ill-health, or a similar incident.
Only recently one of the world's most famous chefs, known for his innovative cooking style and sense of adventure, and his status as a TV celebrity, had to close his UK restaurant and pay thousands in compensation to ill customers. It appears that his restaurant had been struck down by a mysterious virus and could not be blamed on poor conditions, or slack hygiene standards. But the message is clear, if it can happen in one of the best restaurants in the world, it can happen anywhere.
It's unlikely that the Birmingham pizza shop owner had such a sympathetic hearing as the TV chef though and for whom, the best takeaway insurance might not save.
The owner in question got a sentence of nearly 40 weeks, suspended for two years. The man had admitted around ten individual breaches of the food hygiene regulations. The man also had to do a set amount of hours of unpaid work and had to pay costs.
