1. Land Rover Discovery - first entering Land Rover dealers in 1989 when the company was owned by Rover, the car is now into its fourth generation under the guidance of Tata Motors, the group's fourth owner.
One of the primary reasons why the Land Rover Discovery is such a popular family car is that it has the capability to carry up to seven people (there are two fold down seats available in the boot space) in a comfortable environment, has more space than most families would ever need and yet doesn't look like a family car and is extremely powerful, making it a suitable vehicle for other purposes.
Available from 33,040 pounds on the road, the Discovery is one of those cars you never get tired of driving.
2. Ford Galaxy - production of the Ford Galaxy started in 1995 and whilst it wasn't particularly well received (several critics, including Top Gear, said it was one of "the least satisfying cars available in the UK"), over the years it has developed into a highly respectable family car.
Although not as powerful as the Land Rover Discovery (the largest engine that the Galaxy is sold with is a 2.3 litre - the Discovery's is a 5 litre V8), the Galaxy has just as much space with seven seats (with the second and third rows folding flat for space if need be) and is over 10,000 pounds cheaper at 22,945 pounds on the road.
3. Range Rover Sport - also available in Land Rover dealers, the Range Rover Sport is the sister car to the Land Rover Discovery and has been associated with footballers and celebrities for many years.
Not a cheap option - the Range Rover Sport carries a basic price tag of 46,240 pounds - you do get what you pay for, which includes keyless entry, privacy glass, heated rear seats and an integrated cooler compartment.
4. Seat Altea XL - a development of the Seat Altea, the XL is an extra 7.4 inches longer, which although doesn't seem like a substantial amount, makes a lot of difference when inside.
Available in a vast array of different engine sizes, from a 1.4 litre petrol to 2 litre diesel, the Altea XL has everything you could want in a family car - a big boot, a whole host of security features and just enough pieces of automobile technology to suit even the most needy of drivers.
Plus, with prices starting well under 20,000 pounds, it's affordable to the majority of families.
