Taking Chances: Advice To Students Retaking Sats

Standardized exams are typical college admission requirements

. Test scores are considered when evaluating applications, and assessing how students shall fare, academically.

The SAT, which is administered by the College Board, is one of the common standardized exams recognized by colleges. Recently though, the significance of standardized exams results has been widely debated about.

There are applicants who have turned in impressive essays and academic ratings in high school, yet failed to achieve a favorable SAT score. In situations like this, students, more often than not, retake exams. Universities usually allow super scoring. This process allows the student take SAT repeatedly. The college shall regard the highest score earned by the student on each exam component, to calculating final scores.

Retaking SAT is hence favorable to those who got low scores their first time. They can pull up their scores if they get to attain higher remarks on their succeeding attempts. So those who already ended up with scores in the 90th percentile on first take may not have to repeat exams anymore.

But to you, who are already decided about retaking, beware of these tips.

Look back to reviewers you used. The exam resources you used the last time might have not helped you that much. For instance, no similar question was included in the exams. In that case, switching to other reviewers might be beneficial as you take practice exams.

Rethink difficulties you experienced. You probably have had a hard time working on the limited testing period. Or you might have been confused on questions that involve analogy. Recall these factors that have adversely affected your performance so you can find appropriate ways to ward them off. Did you find it hard locating the testing location? Then, it would be of great help if you can visit the area before the scheduled exam.

Leave it blank when youre unsure. SAT penalizes for wrong answers. If you are unsure of the answer, leave the item blank. It is imperative to skip questions which you find hard, and then go back again where you left off when you still have time. Do not waste time staring blankly at questions you have the no clue how to respond to.

Dont rush. SAT is administered several times annually. You do not have to take the exam that is closest to the last you have taken. Set an allowance for preparation. Note as well that you can request for changes in exam schedule, if you deem that you still lack preparation.

Take the SAT Skills Insight. College Board offers a free tool on their website for examinees to assess the skills they need, so they can achieve scores they are aiming for. Using the SAT skills insight tool, you can gather ideas which areas you need to focus more, or skills that you need to work out on.

Warning: SAT retake isn't for all

If anything, there are also colleges that do not require applicants to take standardized exams. If your university choice does not require applicants to take SAT, then you skip the exams.

Also, inquire from the university you are applying how they evaluate SAT scores. NOT all colleges observe the super scoring strategy. Some compute for the average, while some look into the score acquired by the student on their most recent exam take.

General reminders

Last minute mishaps are inevitable.

See to it that your alarm clock is working properly, and that everything you need - from pens, to photo IDs to you admission ticket are all in your bag already.

In addition, listen to the facilitator's instructions carefully. Do not proceed to the next section of the exam unless you are told to do so. If you are after a particular scholarship offer, check out as well if the grant-giving body has any requirements regarding test scores.
