Taking Great Pictures Of Your Dog

If you've ever tried to take a good picture of your dog you probably already know that it can be a hit or miss affair

. You may be lucky and get a great snap or, more often than not, you get your dog's nose on the lens or his tail swishing where a dog used to be standing. Dogs can drive you nuts when you're trying to get a picture.

Most people want their dog to be clean and well-groomed when they start taking his picture, but don't discount a fun photo of your dog when he's been swimming or playing in the mud!

Here are a few tips to help you take pictures of your best friend:

- Pay attention to your dog's mood. If you want to get some pictures of your dog when he's mellow, take pictures after he's had a good play session. If you want pictures of him being wild and crazy, take pictures before he's had his daily exercise.

- Let your dog get used to the camera. If you bring out the camera and start taking pictures once a month, chances are that you won't get many memorable photos. Instead, bring out your camera and let your dog smell it. Take a lot of pictures so your dog forgets about it. After your dog forgets about the camera he can start behaving naturally and then you can get some good pictures.

- Try to avoid using a flash if you can. The flash on a camera makes most dogs look a little eerie and unnatural -- which is not usually the look most people are going for. You may have to use a flash indoors but try to keep the lighting very natural.

- Most pictures of dogs look best if they are taken at your dog's level and not from the owner's height. This lets the viewer feel closer to the dog.

- Pay attention to the backgrounds you use. Find places to photograph your dog that compliment his coat and which let him stand out. Think about color and composition in your photographs.

- Consider having a friend to help you. Professional photographers often have an assistant with a squeaky toy so they can get a dog looking excited or perky. Be careful though. Some dogs can get too excited when you bring out toys.

- Practice taking shots of your dog from different angles and from different distances. Take pictures where he fills up the camera frame or where his face fills the entire picture. Be creative and see what happens. Take lots of pictures and see how some of them turn out. With digital cameras it's very easy to be creative and, if you don't like the results, you can simply delete them.

Most importantly, have fun with your dog. Taking pictures of your dog can be fun for both of you. Let your dog play and see what comes out when both of you start having a good time.
