Most people need to wear a suit at some time in their lives, making them a near-universal presence in men's wardrobes. However, a stylish suit means nothing if it isn't properly cared for, making it essential to follow correct cleaning and care instructions to avoid letting your appearance down on big days.

Suits can last for many years if properly maintained. If you only wear it for special occasions, and your size remains constant, one good suit could even last you a lifetime. But there are still many people who feel they are in the dark when it comes to taking care of their suits - from how often their suits should be cleaned to something as simple as hanging it in the wardrobe.

To address the latter issue first, storing your suit on a wooden hanger can be important for keeping its shape, particularly in the shoulders, as less sturdy metal and plastic hangers tend to bend and buckle more easily under the suit's weight. You should also ensure there is sufficient distance between your jacket and other items of clothing, allowing it to air out properly - even if this means earmarking a dark recess of your wardrobe as a dedicated suit section.

Before storing your suit however, you should try to manually clean it to remove any soiling picked up over the course of the day. This doesn't mean taking it to the cleaners after every use - as too much cleaning can damage the materials and cause it to lose its shape if done more than a few times each year - but a quick, careful brushing can be highly effective at removing dirt particles, hair and lint that could remain on your jacket unnoticed when you next wear it, and let your appearance down.

Similarly, mens suits should only be ironed when essential, as this could also enhance their deterioration, especially if you iron the edges. Consider steaming your suit instead, which can be just as effective at removing wrinkles.

While many suit manufacturers recommend dry cleaning, this can lead to new problems, due to the chemicals used, making wet cleaning a viable alternative in many cases. If you do get your suit dry cleaned for convenience though, be sure to remove it from the protective plastic covering once you arrive back home, as this could emit fumes that damage your jacket's fibres if stored over a long period.
