, connected behind and pulled by a powered vehicle. The common use of trailers is for transporting goods and animals. There is much confusion as to what the term trailer means. This article aims to clear the confusion and explains what a custom trailer is.

Although the terms tractor-trailer or trailer truck includes a trailer, it actually refers to a large lorry or truck with two sections, one in front where the driver sits and one behind for carrying goods. The sections are connected a flexible joint so that the tractor-trailer can turn corners more easily.

In the US, the trailer or travel trailer or camper is a recreational vehicle without an engine that can be pulled by a car or truck and used as a home or an office when it is parked in a trailer park. In Britain, the same is referred to as mobile home or caravan. Such vehicles have limited living facilities and are generally used for camping.

Having eased the confusion, I now turn to types of trailers and custom-built trailers.

The most basic trailer is a single axle, two-wheeled Box Trailer for carrying household goods or a custom trailer built for vendors to carry out their business by moving and selling. A kitchen trailer is a self-contained wheeled kitchen or an eatery towed by a vehicle, parked at a fixed place, where people come and have meals.

A variety of custom trailer include bicycle trailers, motorcycle trailers and Car Trailers. These are generally open-sided, multi-axle, multi-wheel trailers for transporting bicycles, motorcycles and cars respectively as well as heavy construction equipment and industrial goods.

A highly specialized custom trailer is a generator or genset trailer used for producing power where electricity is not available, generally used for public works like digging, laying roads, cleaning clogged sewers, etc. Another variety of custom trailer is a hydraulic trailer mostly used as a garbage dumper.

There a number of custom trailers for hauling livestock such as horses and cattle. The most common is the stock trailer with a platform and low level closed sides for animals to stand, but open at the animals eye level to allow them to breath. A horse trailer or horse float is a more elaborate type of trailer built specially for hauling horses.

Specialized trailers for personal use include those built for transporting boats, Jet Skis, surfboards and gliders. In short, whatever the need, there always is a custom trailer.
