Talibanization and the Damage It Has Done to Pashto Attan in Pakistan

Rise of terrorism in Pakistan has done several damages to Pakistan in the form of economic, social, as well as environmental losses. Pashto Attan is considered a rich part of pashtun culture which seems to be the most affected element of pashtun culture. As khyber pukhtunkhwa, a province populated by pashtuns, is considered to be the craddle of talibanization therefore it is obvious that pashtuns be the most affected ethnic group.

The problem started right after 9/11 when US attacked Afghanistan. Pakistani taliban are sometimes referred to as the outcome of US's decision to invade Afghanistan. If we analyze the demographics, we will see that the area which is known as khyber pukhtunkhwa (in Pakistan) used to be a part of Afghanistan some one century ago. It makes it clear that people across the border from these two countries have severe ties with each other. This is the reason why NATO army never got succeeded in stopping the cross border movement.

Pashtuns are also very strict as far as the religion is concerned therefore attack on Afghanistan was considered to be an attack on them as they consider them their own kind. Outsiders involvement was another factor that prevailed talibanization in the province which resulted in the high number of young ones being recruited on daily basis to carry out suicide attacks and other terrorist activities.

So what was the scenario before all this happen? It was quite different. Nobody would ever believe that those who are now seen carrying guns and their faces covered were living a very vivid and rich life full of entertainment and cultural practices which included pahto attan. Attan is a traditional pashto dance which is practiced by pashtuns on different occasions. It may be a sport event, a religious festival, a wedding, or an election campaign.The pashto dance requires a wide open space to do it hence it was being performed in open grounds.

Talibans when took over control of many areas in Pukhtunkhwa started to impose their own ideology on people which included ban on music and any such related event. Pashto attan which was once a prominent part of pashtun culture was no more practiced because of the threat that talibans posed to the people. Nobody could dare to do it in open ground as the chances of being hit by taliban were very high, as the areas were under control of them.

This thing raised worries in the intellectual sector and those who were binded to their culture. One thought was that it is an end and we might not be able to see it happening again but thanks to Pakistan army who diligently fought and forced taliban to retreat and emptied the areas that were once under their control. This revived the culture that was almost not being practiced for more than four or perhaps five years.
