Talking While Driving

Talking while driving usually does not cause a problem

. However, when you talk while you are driving, you are naturally distracted by the conversation that is going on. Therefore, you should always make sure that your eyes are focused on the road ahead of you. This means making sure that all of your electronic devices are turned off and that both of your hands are on the wheel. In some states, representatives are trying to voice their opinion on having laws passed that would prohibit talking on a cell phone entirely.

Have you ever noticed that when you drive with certain people and talk to them as you are driving that they are unable to really focus on what it is you are saying? How about the opposite effect? There are certain people who, when you drive with them, every other word that comes out of your mouth gets a well meaning glance. For example, whenever I drive with my aunt, she has the habit of turning towards me and talking to me while she is driving! It's all I can do to tell her to keep her eyes on the road so that we don't get into a car accident.

When I was driving with my mother and my brother recently to visit my grandmother, we were chatting about something and before we knew it, someone was honking at my mother from behind. It turns out that she wasn't paying attention, and the light had turned green for her to proceed. This happened two more times before both my brother and I declared out loud that my mother was incapable of driving and talking at the same time.

If you've ever received a phone call that was upsetting or have gotten into a verbal dispute with someone while in the car, then you know how distracting it can be to have to focus on changing lanes as you are yelling over your shoulder or being yelled at. This isn't to say that while you are driving, you shouldn't be allowed to talk at all. Instead, this simply means that you should be more aware of how you react when you are engaged in a conversation with someone else. What are you thinking about during that conversation? Do you find yourself daydreaming? If you know that you are prone to not paying attention while you are driving, then you should abstain from speaking on the phone. If there is someone in your car with you, keep the conversation friendly yet emotionally detached. Remind yourself of where your priorities (in that moment) lie.

For some people, refocusing on the road is as simple as turning their cell phone to 'silent' before stepping foot in their cars while for others, it takes less. The key is to find a balance. You don't want to chauffeur people around in your car and tell them before hand that they will not be allowed to speak at all. However, you don't want to wind up in the middle of a heated argument with three other people in your vehicle either.
