Tamara Mariea Reports That Cell Phone Use Increases Brain Activity
Tamara Mariea, quoting recent findings by the National Institutes of Health, states, "When a cell phone is in use, brain activity speeds up near a cell phone antenna." Whether or not that sped up activity is dangerous, acknowledges Tamara Mariea, is really yet to be determined. "However these findings continue to raise awareness and concerns about the low-level radiation being admitted by cellular phones," adds Tamara Mariea.
This most recent study, led by Dr. Nora Volkow, came with a caution, according to Tamara Mariea, Internal Balance founder. "Again, we are not completely aware of the total ramifications of these findings and how they impact the body," notes Tamara Mariea. Yet this study, points out Tamara Mariea, adds validation to a number of studies concerning cell phones. "At this time, this is the largest documentation of its nature," explains Tamara Mariea. Cell phone activity, maintains Tamara Mariea, alters brain activity. "This we know."
A few studies, explains Tamara Mariea, have linked heavy cell phone use to rare brain tumors. "While some studies have shown little evidence between cell phone use and brain tumors, I think using a head set is a necessary precaution," states Tamara Mariea. Even though many experts have said there is no danger in cell phone use, Tamara Mariea believes that consumers should exercise caution.
The conclusions of the recent study, states Tamara Mariea (quoting Dr. Volkow), "do not lead us down any roads concerning cancer or answer any cancer related questions." Yet according to Tamara Mariea, also quoting Dr. Volkow, she is encouraged that the study "could pose new questions of research concerning cell phone usage and brain activity."
The study led by Dr. Volkow, explains Tamara Mariea, used positron emission tomography (PET) scans with 49 participants. "They placed cell phones up to the ears, simulating calls, without sound in order to not stimulate any auditory functions," relates Tamara Mariea. They did scans, both with phones on and phones off, Tamara Mariea further explains. Metabolism of the brain was not affected at all by the test. However, says Tamara Mariea, there was a 7 percent increase in brain activity close to the phone antenna when the phone was turned on.
"At Internal Balance, we will continue to follow studies concerning cell phone use and brain activity," concludes Tamara Mariea.
