Tankless Water Heaters Last Longer Than Traditional Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters have been very popular in Europe and the Far East for the past 20 years or so. Their use has been rather minimal here in the US but they are definitely catching up in use and popularity. These units have some definite advantages and benefits. One factor in their favor is that tankless water heaters last longer than traditional water heaters. Well discuss the reasons why in greater detail.

A tankless water heater is designed to heat water as required. Since there is no water storage tank, less energy is needed since the water will only be heated when it is required. Most units are designed to heat water very rapidly so it is available as needed and in quantities to satisfy most households.

Tankless water heaters are produced by a variety of manufacturers. Some of the most popular included the Bosch, Rinnai, Noritz, and Takagi.

Many of these units are gas tankless water heaters although they can be produced as electric tankless water heaters as well. These units are typically much smaller than a traditional water heater and they have been found to last longer as well.

There are some key reasons why this is so. A traditional water heater is comprised of a large 40 or 50 gallon tank which holds and stores the heated water. Over time the heated water stored in the tank develops deposits which sink to the bottom of the tank and eat away at the metal.

Since the heating element is normally located near the bottom of the tank, over time it becomes more and more difficult to heat the water in the tank efficiently since the built up deposits act as insulation.

These deposits also tend to clog inlet and outlet connections. Since these deposits cannot be removed, the unit needs to be replaced when conditions warrant.

It has been shown that the average lifespan of a traditional water heater is between 8 to 12 years. However a gas fired tankless water heater should last from 15 to 20 years and an electric one can last as long as 30 to 40 years. They do not store water and the same mineral deposits do not accumulate in the units. Instead of needing to replace an entire tank, with a tankless minor parts are be replaced prolonging the life of the unit.

A tankless water heater can save up to 20% in regular energy usage. And the greatly increased operating life of a tankless water heater more than makes up for modest initial higher purchase price.
