It was considered that the migration was a frenzy and the Gnus were just crossing the land blindly, but some resent researchers came to the conclusion that the Wildebeest herds possessed swarm intelligence, in other words collective behaviour and self organized systems, thus overcoming the obstacles on the way as one and systematically exploring the land.

Another interesting fact about them is that they take turns during the night guarding and signalling the herd if predators are approaching scientists are still trying to figure out if it is in their DNA or is an acquired behaviour.
