Tarps or tarpaulins are large sheets which are water-resistant, strong and flexible. It is made by cloth such as polyester or canvas or plastics. At some places, people call it hootchie. So that they can be tied down, they have grommets at the sides and corners to form attachment points.

Tarpaulin, this word originated from the compound of the words tar and palling which means a canvas pall which is tarred and is used on ships to cover objects. According to one of the theories, sailors came to be known as tarpaulins.

There are mainly two types namely polytarp and perforated tarp. A polypropylene tarp or polytarp is basically a laminate of sheet and woven material. Whereas perforated ones are mainly used for advertisements or large medium advertisements like for billboards. They are also used on scaffoldings. These tarps are basically useful anywhere where you need to cover things from the natural elements like sun, wind and water. There are baseball ones which are mainly designed to cover baseball fields at the time of rain. The way these are made makes them more durable and resistant towards water and wind. They are mainly used for protection.
