. Apparently Task Manager appears like just a window that informs you about the programs running on your computer. Explore the processes running on your computer. To launch the Task Manager press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. By default the Applications tab is selected and it displays the programs running on your computer. Well, if you want to see what's exactly running on your PC then click the Processes tab and check "Show processes from all users" box. You will find a long list of the processes. Scroll down the list and if you want to know about a process right-click it and select Properties.

The Task Manager also allows you to diagnose disk thrashing. Click the Task Manager Processes tab and then click View - Select Columns - check I/O Read Bytes and I/O Write Bytes - Click OK. The total amount of data read or written by a process will be displayed on the new columns. The largest figures refer to the busiest process.

In many cases, processes eat up more and more Windows resources. With the help of Task Manager you can spot a resource leak. To perform this, just click the Processes tab and then click View - Select Columns - check Handles - User Objects and GDI Objects - click OK. Here you need to check these occasionally.

You can also stop a runaway process through the Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and wait for Task Manager to appear. Look for the process consuming all your CPU time. To kill the process completely, just right-click it, and then select End Process, the process will be closed. Well, before ending the process you should know what you are closing. This is because if you are closing a Windows component, then it may crash your system immediately and you may lose your unsaved data.

You can also fix some start up problems through the Task Manager. You may have noticed that Windows Media Player is crashing from time to time. Sometimes, the program crashes without having any visible window so the user cant identify what exactly the problem is. If you experience that Windows Media Player won't launch, then, open Task Manager and click the Processes tab and look for a WMPlayer.exe process. Just right-click it and select End Process, this will resolve the issue. Start Media Player after executing the process and you will find that the things are back to normal.
