Tattoo Fading Or Tattoo Removal - What's The Difference?
That tattoo that seemed really cool when you got it several years ago now doesn't seem so cool
. Maybe it's caused you problems when trying to get a job or maybe it's caused some issues in your personal life. In any event, you want it gone. You've done some research into tattoo removal methods and in almost every case, they talk about fading the tattoo, not removing it.
It seems pretty basic, either the tattoo is going to be removed or it isn't. If the removal technique involves gradually fading the tattoo, then it will be faded completely away, right? Not necessarily.
The most common tattoo removal methods are laser, IPL (intense pulsed light), removal creams and gels, and TCA (trichloroacetic acid). All involve fading the tattoo over some period of time, as long as twelve months, depending on the tattoo, skin type, and removal method.
All these techniques involve gradually fragmenting the tattoo ink and having it either absorbed by the body or peeled off along with a minute layer of skin. If all tattoos were alike, if all inks were alike, if all peoples' skin were the same, this would be pretty cut-and-dried: apply the technique enough times until the tattoo is completed faded away - completely removed. Unfortunately, tattoos, inks, and peoples' skins are not alike.
Some tattoos are deeper than others. Some inks react differently to removers than others. Some colors are more easily removed than others. Peoples' skin react differently, even on the same person; the thin skin of ankles and wrists is more difficult to remove a tattoo from than fleshier parts of the body.
That's why, when you read the fine print of any tattoo "removal" method, they will say results will vary. "Removal" may be fading to a degree that the tattoo no longer stands out enough to be an issue. In a lot of cases, but not all, the tattoos may actually be faded completely away. So tattoo fading and tattoo removal aren't necessarily the same thing.
