Tattoo Removal: What To Expect After A Tattoo Removal Procedure

We all do things that we regret- permed hair, bad dye job

, multiple piercings, gain weight... you get the picture. The good thing about these "mistakes" is that they are easily reversible. Your hair grows out, the piercings heal up and you can lose the weight. But, what if your regret is a tattoo?

Luckily, you have options to get rid of or at least greatly reduce the appearance of it. There are three kinds of laser treatments for tattoo removal. Here's what you can expect afterwards as you recover from the removal process:

First of all, there will be some pain. Remember how it felt after you got the tattoo? There was a stinging sun-burn kind of feeling. Tattoo removal will have a similar sun burn feel to it. For a day or so, the area may appear white, but that is temporary. Just like you had to care for the area until the skin healed from the tattoo, you have to care for the skin after removal as well.

Initially, there will be some swelling, pain and possibly a little bit of bleeding. Your surgeon will instruct you to keep the area clean with an anti-bacterial cleanser. Only use topical creams or ointments that your surgeon gives you to apply to the area. Do not clean with alcohol as this will dry and irritate the tender new skin trying to heal.

You can take anti-inflammatory medicine if the pain and swelling is too much for you. Ice packs also work well for calming the area. Don't be alarmed if you experience some peeling from the treatment area. That is simply the dead skin falling away and making room for the fresh new skin. Expect the area to be sensitive for a couple of weeks and during this time you must avoid the sun when possible. Keep an SPF of at least 15 on the area as well.

Now, you will need more than one tattoo removal treatment to obtain the results you want so be prepared to go through all of this in a couple of months. The reason you have multiple treatments is because the laser is not "removing" the tattoo literally. What it does is break up the ink molecules into smaller particles so the body can flush them out naturally. It may take a couple of sessions to completely remove the ink.

If you are interested in tattoo removal, make sure you find the right plastic surgeon for the job. Find out what kind of experience he has and look at pictures of his patients' results. Find out about the system he uses too. They are not all the same and some give better results with an easier recovery.

You were so sure you would love that heart on your shoulder forever... Thank goodness for cosmetic surgery technology!
