Teach Your Dog His Social Manners

If you're taking your dog on vacation make sure that he is socialized with other dogs and other people

. This is important not just because it's enjoyable for your dog, but because it helps your dog overcome fear of other dogs (and people), and defensive behavior such as snapping or excessive barking at dogs they might encounter on their walk. It's a lot more fun-and less stress-to have a dog that greets other dogs and new people with a wagging tail or a friendly bark.

In most hotels, bed and breakfasts, and even, cabins, the dog is not allowed to be left alone unattended in the room. Even so you don't want your canine companion to bark every time someone walks down the hall or by the window. Socialization can help avoid that needless barking.

In recent years, two venues for socialization have appeared on the scene with more and more frequency: the dog park and the "doggy day care" center. Dog parks today are much more than a fenced off plot of grass. Municipalities have recognized that a dog friendly environment attracts people to the community, and they are adding amenities to the dog parks such as shaded seating areas, drinking fountains, sometimes even play pools, and lights. Dogs love this activity because they get to experience the joy of running free, and picking out friends to run with, forming a temporary "pack". And it can be a relaxing break in your day to get away from things and hang out with your dog at the park.

If you haven't gone to the dog park, start a few weeks before vacation. You don't have to go everyday but you should try to get out there perhaps three or four times a week. Start with a short visit when there are few dogs at the park and build up to a longer stay at a busier time of day, such as in the evening after work, or on the weekends.

Doggy day care centers have been a lifesaver for the dog owner who feels guilty having to leave their pet alone all day while they are at work. No matter how lovely your home is, it is contrary to a dog's basic nature to be alone. They are sociable creatures, and the dog that spends the day running around with other dogs is likely to be a happy dog when you bring them home in the evening.
