As guitar beginners, we often ask if it is better to teach yourself guitar or take actual lessons from a teacher?

In the past, taking lessons from a music school or engaging a tutor seems to be the only option when you want to learn to play the guitar. Although traditional guitar learning method is great in terms of mentorship, it is not easy to find someone who understands your interests and goals. Your learning progress may be slower as you have to conform to the teacher's schedule. If you are learning as a group, it is hard to catch up when you had to skip a class due to work, study or family. After completing the practice exercises, you will have to wait a few days or so for the next lesson.

Traditional guitar learning method will cost you a great amount of money, around a few hundreds a month for weekly sessions. The amount will be greater if you engage a highly qualified teacher or have to take on extended lessons as you are slow in grasping the techniques. Not to forget the travelling expenses incurred to and fro the school or the teacher's place.

Many people have the misconception that it is hard teaching yourself guitar as there is no one to monitor your progress. In fact, it is not difficult to do so if you are keen to learn guitar. Passion and discipline are the keys to becoming the impressive guitar player that you dreamed of. Nowadays, there are many ways to teach yourself how to play guitar, ranging from books, DVDs to software. Using guitar teaching software has became the most preferred method as long as you have a guitar and a computer.

Most of these guitar teaching software provide a complete beginner to advanced course that is easy to follow. The video lessons are so professionally recorded that you can see clearly where to place your fingers and strum at the same time. If you find a particular technique difficult, you can revisit the video as many times till you master it. It can be awkward to ask your teacher to repeat the same technique for more than 2 times.

Teaching yourself guitar also allows you to pick up any part that you had left off as and when you are free. If you are consistent in your learning, you will be able to play guitar faster than using the traditional method.

Teach yourself guitar is an ideal option if:

- You have a busy schedule whether for work, study or family. It gives you the flexibility to learn from home and whenever you want.

- You are unwilling to pay for expensive lessons from a music school or tutor. Guitar teaching software, books or DVDs are much cheaper and well worth paying for if you found the right guide.

- You are self-motivated and disciplined. You learn better at your own pace and do not require supervision from a teacher.
