Teaching Your Child Good Personal Hygiene
Children of all ages are exposed to millions of germs at school
, at the park and even at home. It is important for parents to teach their kids the basics in personal hygiene and health. The earlier on in life one is able to instil these values into the children, the easier it is for them to maintain health and cleanliness in the long-run. It is especially crucial for children to understand the importance of washing hands regularly, bathing, and maintenance of oral health.
Health and Hygiene among the Adolescent
Additionally, when your child grows up, he or she goes through a number of hormonal changes that result in growth of body hair, oils and body odour. Hygiene habits at this age are especially important for them to maintain good health.
Washing Hands Regularly
One of the most important lessons that you can teach your child about personal health and hygiene is regular washing of hands. This is especially important when they come back from the outdoors, from school or playing in the park. Make it a habit to have them wash their hands before every meal, since this is the easiest way to spread germs and cause illnesses.
This may be quite a challenge especially among pre-schoolers who either may refuse to follow through on this or get carried away and make a mess every time they wash their hands. Remind them to wash their hands with soap for 15 seconds before they wash it off.
Dental Hygiene
Any Vancouver based dentistry expert will tell you how important it is to promote oral hygiene among kids at a younger age. Make it a habit to have them brush their teeth twice a day, gargle after every meal and ensure that they clean their tongue on a regular basis. The easiest way to encourage oral health among your children is by setting an example.
Social Etiquette
A number of social etiquettes have been a result of the need to maintain a healthy and clean environment. For example, your children needs to know that one must cover their mouth and nose with a tissue every time they wish to sneeze or cough. Germs can travel great distances through a cough or a sneeze and it is our responsibility to curb the spread of germs among other kids who play with them.
They should also be taught not to pick their nose and keep touching their eyes or mouth since those are the most vulnerable entry points for most germs.
Bathing Regularly
Considering the active life of your children, it is important that as a parent, you encourage bathing twice a day. Bathing before one leaves for school is a great way to give their day a fresh start. On the other hand, if you child has had a rough day in the park, at the baby gym or at the karate classes, it is important that they wash off all the germs and toxins before going to bed. This is also a great way to relax your child before they get into bed.
Additionally, it is important for you to supervise them at younger ages while they use shampoos and shower gels, and also make sure that they dont hurt themselves by slipping on the bathroom floor.
As mentioned earlier, the easiest way to encourage health and hygiene among your kids is by setting an example.
