Teak: A Wonderful Wood for Patio Furniture
Teak: A Wonderful Wood for Patio Furniture
Now that you have a patio or deck, you need furniture for it. A table or two to hold your alfresco lunch or dinner. Some chairs. That sort of thing. To make the best use of your patio, you want sturdy, durable furniture that will last a long time, even when it lives outdoors. That means wood furniture and the best wood for you is teak.
Teak is a very durable wood that wants only a little care. After all, teak was the preferred wood for the decks of sailing ships. It stood up to blistering tropic sun, howling gales and frozen artic spray for years. It will last just as long and just as well for you with minimal care.
Teak furniture is heavy enough that you won't have to chase it into the neighbor's yard when the wind blows. On the other hand, you won't need two strong men and a boy to move your table. Teak just makes good, solid furniture.
Teak furniture is easy to care for. To find out how, just look up my article "How To Care For Teak Patio Furniture" in this magazine.
Teak furniture is beautiful. You will find teak furniture finished in two ways, fine sanded or oiled.
Fine Sanded Teak will show only the natural color and grain of the wood. If you keep it indoors, away from sunlight, in six months to a year, it will age from a its original yellow-brown-olive color to a darker shade of brown. If you use your teak patio furniture outdoors, in direct sunlight, the original color will bleach out to a soft silver-gray color. Many people find this color very attractive. Whether indoors or out, you should not have to treat the wood in any way except to wash off surface dust and dirt. This is the finish I prefer.
Some people like their teak oiled. Oiled Teak is already a mid brown color and has a soft sheen because of the oil. Kept indoors, the wood will keep that same color for many years. If you use your oiled teak patio furniture outdoors, it will age to the same silver-gray as un-oiled teak, but the process will be much slower. Whether indoors or out, you will want to apply a fresh coat of oil from time to time.
The teak tree grows in the tropics, but not in the tropical rain forest. Teak is an upland tree and it grows on tree farms that are carefully managed to keep the forest healthy and productive. That is the way we grow oak and walnut on my tree farm in the Appalachians.
Not only do tree farms not damage the environment, they actually help reverse global warming. Whether teak, oak, pine or any other type of tree, a growing forest takes carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to produce the carbon in the wood. My oak and walnut forest removes hundreds of tons of CO2 from the air every year. A teak forest does the same thing.
For patio furniture that will be beautiful today and stay just as beautiful for many years, select teak.
