Teak...The Sophisticated Wood

For me, Teak Wood is the Cadillac of the industry. It has such a luxurious look to it, that smooth, shiny finish is beautiful! It isan expensive wood, but well worth the price you pay. Adding a Teak table and chairs to your patio is the height of sophistication.

It is an extremely solid hardwood that is very durable and will last for many years with very little maintenance. Not only has Teak Wood been used for indoor and outdoor furniture but also used for centuries in ship building. The timber can hold up against the salty ocean water and the hot sun with no deterioration. The high levels of natural oil in the wood makes it resistant to rot or decay brought on by termites or insects.

Natural Teak Wood is found in countries that have a tropical climate. Such countries are India, Indonesia and Thailand, to name a few. These days most of the wood comes from plantations that are environmentally friendly with renewable forests. They are regulated by their government as to the size and number of trees that can be removed from the forest. After these trees are harvested, new trees are planted in their place for future use.

Left outdoors, the color of the wood will gradually change from light brown to dark brown, and eventually will turn a soft silver grey color. This is the natural process due to the suns rays. It does not have to be treated in any way. It is perfectly fine left as is, if this is the look you prefer.

If you do not like the weathered look, your outdoor teak furniture can be washed once a year to preserve its natural color. Use a mild detergent and water to wash away any dust and pollen, then rinse with a garden hose in a gentle spray setting. Using high-pressure water is really not recommended, since this can damage your furniture. Let the wood dry for 24 hours. If you like the color, then you can apply the Teak oil. If the color is too dark then repeat the process.

You may choose to use Teak oils, wax sealers or other products, which will keep your outdoor wood furniture looking new. These finishing products can be found in any hardware store. To apply properly, follow instructions carefully. Once again, be sure the wood has had ample time to dry. This procedure can be done once or twice a year to give your outdoor furniture that fresh shiny look. It will not, however, increase the life of the wood, that is a given because of the type of timber it is.

The use of varnish or polyurethane finish, stains or sealers is not recommended because of the oil secreted from the wood itself. These products will not adhere properly, and will produce a blotchy finish.
