If you have been landed with the job of organising a team building session or conference activity, here are a few tips to help you on your quest to organise an activity that will be memorable for all the right reasons.

Variety. Accept that you won't be able to please everyone in the group. That's why it's a good idea to do a variety of activities, either on the day or throughout the year.

Activity first. If you are organising a conference have a look at activities first as this can give you direction for a good conference venue too. e.g. A soccer tournament activity with the conference at the football stadium

Call it something else. If the term 'team building' brings a collective groan to your group, call it something else. Many activities are just great experiences where team bonding happens naturally so why not call it a group activity, conference breakout or experiential session.

Decide on your objectives. Is this session about reward and team bonding or would you benefit from team development and more structured training. Both are 'team building', but team development goes beyond the pure fun of a team bonding experience.

Budget. Try to get an idea of your budget. Activities can range from less than $50 per person into the thousands. Having a rough budget will save you time in selecting a suitable activity.

The past. If you are new to the company or team, make sure you know what activities have been done before and get an idea of what went down well, this will give you a good indication of what sort of thing will work this time too.

Conference kick-off. Use activities to start your conference. They can set the tone for the rest of the time and everyone will relax with each other, communicate better and participate more for the rest of the time.

Bring in help. Sometimes the best thing is to bring in the experts. If you don't have a preferred team building company then contact a few, give them a brief and get a feel for who would be the best fit to deliver the event - and don't be afraid to ask for testimonials.

Weather. If you choose an outdoor activity, don't forget to have a back-up plan in case of bad weather. If you have one, chances are the weather will be fine, but don't leave it to the last minute to organise as this will stress you more than anything.

It's not all about you! Remember who you are organising the activities for. Don't disregard certain activities just because you don't like the sound of them. Think about your people and what they would like to do. Get some ideas and run them past a few people.
