Tech Explained - Sdsl Versus Adsl - The Differences & Similarities

Part of the digital subscriber line technologies is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line or ADSL

. Rather than the old dial up modems, this allows for high speed communication over telephone copper cables. ADSL started to become more common in around 2003 and by 2005 many households had made the swap. To use ADSL a micro filter must be used at each telephone point in a house where either the ADSL modem or a telephone is going to be plugged in to split the frequencies that each rely on to operate.With ADSL being asymmetrical it means that the upload speed is less than that of the download speed. Depending on your location, most broadband providers can give you up to 8mb speed. But typically unless you live very close to your exchange you will not see anything like those speeds. Signal to noise ratio effects the speed as well as the distance from the exchange. An upload speed of approximately 700kb should be expected on such a service. If you are a home user not needing to make large uploads this is more than suitable. An SDSL broadband connection might be considered if you need to work, or make large file transfers. These are normally business class connections and so get a much better support service and reliability. Don't be surprised however if the prices are quite a bit more. SDSL lets you download and upload at the same speed. Not all exchanges are SDSL enabled so you would need to check or ask your DSL service provider to find out for you. You can normally choose from 512k, 1mb or 2mb upload and download speeds. Because SDSL operates on the POTS telephone service, you cannot operate it on a standard telephone line. The distance that SDSL can be implemented on depends on how much noise there is on the line and the data rate used on the line. For most users, and mostly because of the cost, SDSL can be a little over kill. But the upload speeds are getting faster for standard ADSL connections in the UK. ADSL 2+ ITU G.992.5 Annex M can now allow both home and business users upload at 3mbit/s. For those living in remote areas in the UK, it's a waiting game for new services to be offered.
