Techniques For Fishing Catfish Ponds

Catfish live in all types of waters ranging from big lakes and rivers to small ponds

. Many anglers pass up the opportunity to reel in a nice catch because they don't take advantage of the great fishing that ponds have to offer. This is partly because of modern technology that has made so many excellent fishing boats that everyone wants to have one for themselves and as you are well aware, a big fishing boat has no place in a pond.

Still, this shouldn't stop you from taking a day off from the hustle and bustle associate with fishing on lakes and rivers once in awhile to try something different. Take the time to go and enjoy a nice relaxing day fishing for catfish from the edge of a pond. Of course, if the pond is large enough you can use a canoe and paddle out to the middle and fish if you prefer having the water beneath you.

Now, if you're thinking that you don't want to waste your time pond fishing for catfish because you're seeking out some of the larger species, this may surprise you. Some of the larger catfish are found in ponds. This is because many fisherman have the same misconception and so the catfish in ponds have the chance to grow and thrive longer than the ones in lakes and rivers. It's definitely a good place to search for that trophy fish.

Techniques for Catching Catfish In a Pond

Fishing for catfish in a pond is different from seeking them out in lakes and rivers so there are a few things you should be aware of in order to get the best results. For starters, it's much easier to scare the fish away. If you go stomping down to the edge of the water and drop your tackle box on the ground, the fish are going swim to the other side of the pond. Loud talking will also scare them away. This is a small closed-in environment and you need to talk in a whisper and walk gently for the best results. The following techniques should also come in very useful.

4 techniques for fishing catfish ponds:

1. Keep your line tight at all times so you'll know when you have a bite. The catfish tend to hold the bait for a few seconds before swallowing it so when you feel a bite, don't try to set the hook immediately. Give the fish time to swallow it first.

2. Cast your line out as far as you can and allow the bait to drop down to the bottom. Let it sit here for a few seconds before reeling it in. When you do start reeling in your line, do it nice and slow. The catfish don't normally like to chase their food so you'll get better results when you move slowly.

3. Since catfish can't see very well they won't notice bait that's not close enough for them to smell. Therefore, you need to use a weight to help keep your bait down on the bottom of the pond where they're located. If the bait is above them, they normally won't go after it even if they do smell it because the catfish is a lazy species by nature.

4. When searching for the best place to fish, try around structures in the water such as brush, stumps and logs. They can also be found in dips and holes in the bottom of the pond and around vegetation and algae.
