Techniques To A Healthy Living: Discover How Stress Affects You
A stress factor is a form of stimuli coming from internal and external sources that creates negative responses in an individual
. Stressors may include events and challenges that alter the daily living of a person causing him to adjust to a whole new setting. These types of stressors are considered the source by which stress is experienced every person many times in his life. Each individual manages stress differently according to his own perceived definition of stress. Regardless of age, stress can influence a person's behaviour including the not so visible changes within the body.
Body changes affected by stress
Depressing and sad situations such as job loss, death, and financial instability are common causes of stress. When the mind perceives stress, the body responds. The hormone cortisol is deemed as the stress hormone of the body. This is released when stress is experienced. Cortisol functions as an agent in the body ensuring balance. Cortisol affects the physical functions of the body so that the body is able to combat stress. The release of cortisol during stressful situations is a normal reaction of the body. Cortisol in the body however, is increased when there are other external agents introduced in the body. One example of this is drinking alcoholic drinks. Based on research, alcohol consumption increases the level of cortisol in the body. This means that the normal function of the body towards stress is altered due to the presence of alcohol. Determining cortisol levels in the body is crucial among alcoholics because those with higher cortisol levels show greater signs of withdrawal. This data is very important in alcohol treatment programs.
Behavioral changes affected by stress
People deal with stress differently. Modifications in behavior are common in order to ease stress or to divert attention away from stress. Common behavioral reactions to stress are engaging in activities that would divert a person's attention away from it. These activities include sports, vacation and trips, intake of drugs and substances such as alcohol. Activities may prove beneficial but others are more damaging than helpful. Alcohol intake is an example of a negative approach towards stress but it's a common practice among many individuals. The effect of alcohol on the body is immediate which is why it's very attractive to those who want instant stress relief. The long-term effects however, are harmful. Many patients in alcohol rehabilitation centers have started alcohol intake mainly to relieve stress. In time, they have developed the habit and quitting from alcohol intake is already too difficult.
Life is made colorful because of the many experiences a person goes through including dealing with stress. Stress should be approached positively in order to elevate a person's well being. Bad practices of eliminating stress must be stopped before greater intervention is needed.
