Ted Lord Gives Certain Basic Helpful hints On Home Improvement
Ted Lord comes from a long line of architects and general contractors. His father was a general contractor and both of his grandfathers were also from the construction business. His forefathers crafted Philadelphia, to a large extent, having been needed for large scale, commercial constructions plans much like the initial creation of the Conshohocken neighborhood. It was a big surprise to his father and grandfathers when Lord decided to go an alternative route and become a Home Improvement Specialist with training in plumbing, carpentry and the electrician trade. Lord jokes when he remembers how his paternal grandfather reacted to the news that he was not joining the family business. "He called me a glorified handyman," Lord said.
Ted Lord is way more than just a general handyman though he is the first one to tell you that what he likes about his chosen path is his ability to be a jack of all trades. Lord can snake a toilet, fix a burst pipe or completely refurbish a kitchen or bathroom with a high level of skill across every area. "Few professions are as underappreciated and incredibly needed as the handyman," Lord said. It's true, think about it: when electric wiring is on the fritz or a pipe bursts or the door frame needs updating it is a handyman you go to. "That's what I really enjoy about being in general home improvement - one week I am doing the job on an extensive kitchen renovation and the next on a many smaller tasks for varying clients," Lord said.
Recently, Lord happens to be quite popular for his kitchen and bathroom renovations. His good reputation for modernizing kitchens and bathrooms while staying true to the architectural period and style of the house is unlike any other. "It doesn't appear sensible to do a sleek, ultra modern kitchen in a Williamsburg Colonial style house anymore than a 1920s era style of tiling in a modern brick row house in Rittenhouse Square does," Lord said. His updated kitchens and bathrooms are things of beauty and never stand out like the shiny new room within an otherwise older home, however they do often inspire the homeowners to take on longer, more intensive home renovation projects. "Soon I'll send reminders out that air conditioner might not be the first things on their minds in winter, but having their HVAC units serviced before there's a searing heat blanketing the city is a good idea," Lord said. It is this personalized touch together with his high level of skill that has garnered Ted Lord with the outstanding reputation he has.
Lord gets a kick out of it when older Clients who've hired him to rewire a light fixture and put in a new kitchen sink faucet put two and two together and realize he is related to Lord and Sons General Contractors. "Someday I may join the family business," he told us. "But for now I very much enjoy the more relaxed, varied and creative path I am on as a handyman and home improvement specialist."
