Teen Behavior- How To Manage Sleep Issues Without Going Crazy

Did you know that such a simple thing like getting enough sleep is actually a problem for about 25% of teenagers and can be a cause of teen behavior problems? You may not realize that once a teen starts suffering from insomnia or other sleep issues, there is a greater likelihood that he may suffer from :-

Irritability

Mood swings

Loss of concentration at school and during homework

Teen behavior issues start to raise their ugly head.

What are the causes?

Sometimes, there are fairly obvious causes such as playing on the computer too late and also watching TV and answering emails, right up before bedtime. The bright light throws our wake sleep circadian cycles out of sync because it mimics sunlight. As a result we are kept too alert when we should be producing melatonin which is a natural sleep inducing substance in the brain. Too much light of the wrong kind interferes with this process.

The best way to solve that is to have some winding down time with reading, chatting (face to face) with low lights and having a milky drink with honey before actually going to bed.

If your teen is fond of having a snooze in the afternoon, try to discourage that one as it can cause problems later on in getting off to sleep.

There are also simpler things that can be fixed such as too much light in the room. You could even try to use white noise such as an electric fan as that can help a person to get off to sleep. I know some parents who try melatonin as that can also help.

Catching up on sleep is another problem at weekends as it is common for many teenagers to sleep right through after they have been out late, till lunchtime. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that no teenager should ever sleep more than two hours after their normal wake up time. If they do this, the whole wake sleep cycle is disturbed and will cause similar problems to jet lag.

So, if you are worried about sleep issues causing teen behavior problems, try to address some of the above solutions and see if your teen can get a better night's sleep. Everybody in the family will notice the difference. If you are concerned about other teen behavior problems such as aggression, depression or homework and motivation issues, why not let a behavior therapist help you sort out the problem?
