Teenage Journalists Can Write To Save Lives On The Road

The Allstate Foundation is calling all student journalists looking to help change the conversation on teen driving in their communities

. The fifth annual Keep the Drive High School Journalism Awards program, sponsored by The Allstate Foundation, is a creative writing and journalism competition that encourages teens to address the number one killer of teens in the U.S. - motor vehicle crashes.

Students are challenged to either write an article and have it published in the school newspaper, or write and produce a news segment and air it for the entire student body to view. This year, teens are asked to address teen safe driving in their entries (ideas can include the dangers of distracted driving, texting, passenger safety or the importance of teen driving laws).

Submissions are judged on readability or segment flow, message and quality of submission. Entries will be accepted through March 1, 2013 and winners are selected with the help of Quill and Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists.

Visit The Allstate Foundation's website, http://www.allstatefoundation.org/HSJ, for more information about the contest and to see last year's winners.

Here are five ways everyone can be safer behind the wheel:

1. Wear a seat belt all the time.

2. Drive the speed limit.

3. Limit the number of passengers in your car.

4. Pull over to make a call or text a friend.

5. Never drive after drinking alcohol.
