Teeth Brightening Tips

These days we all want the Hollywood smile. Whereas once upon a time, nobody took too much notice of a mouth full of crooked craggy teeth, today a good smile is a sign of success and one way to get that successful smile is with teeth whitening. There are lots of whitening methods and products, which is also known as dental bleaching. Tooth whitening is basically a form of cosmetic dentistry that has been growing steadily in popularity since the 1990s. In fact there is a difference between whitening and bleaching. Any product that cleans the teeth can be referred to as whitening product, toothpaste for example. On the other hand, a bleaching product contains an agent that effectively changes the color of the tooth. Typical agents are hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is usually used by dentists in in-office procedures while most products for home use contain carbamide peroxide. It can be carried out at the dentist's office or at home but it is always necessary to go to a dentist first and make sure that the whitening product is safe to use on your teeth. Teeth can lose their color for a variety of reasons. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth and as the enamel becomes less porous. Bacterial pigments, foodstuff, tobacco and alcohol can also stain teeth over the years. Drugs and chemicals, grinding and trauma can also affect the color of the teeth.

Bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel, laser bleaching and natural bleaching are all different methods to whiten teeth. There are two ways to bleach teeth at home, either with a bleaching gel (which involves using guard trays) or bleaching strips that are like small strips of paper which go over the front of the teeth. The shade of the tooth is lightened by oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The agent penetrates the pores of the tooth enamel and oxidizes or blasts the stains. Over a period of time, the dentin layer which lies just under the enamel is also bleached. Many dentists recommend this kind of take-home kit and maintain that they yield the best results over time. It's necessary to leave some gels on for an hour while others should be kept on overnight. Some people are wary about using these products at home but used correctly, there really is nothing to worry about. And take-home kits do offer many advantages including long term results, convenience, portability and cost. While over the counter teeth whitening products range is price from $4 to $100, the same service at the dentist's office can cost up $400. For the best results there are a few guidelines. First go to the dentist and get a prophylactic clean. Brush and floss before applying the teeth whitening product and avoid dark foods. Stick to these rules and you'll be amazed at the difference teeth whitening can make in your life.
