Our teeth may be affected by varying teeth diseases

. There are various factors that cause these diseases. If the problems are detected in time, they can be cured.

We use teeth when feeding to break down and chew food, making it easy to swallow and digest. Teeth are made of multiple tissues. Their roots are covered by gum. There are various diseases that affect teeth making the victim to suffer greatly.

Plague is a bacteria that thrives on the tooth's surface when food on them is left uncleaned. If not stopped, this soft, sticky and colorless bacteria multiplies and may cause the tooth's enamel to break. It becomes sensitive and decays.

Gingivitis is also referred to as gum disease. It develops slowly and is caused when plague multiplies. It makes the gum to swell and bleed easily. It may affect all the teeth if untreated and cause them to fall out gradually.


Plague left on teeth for a long period develops into tartar which is a thick coating. It forms acids on your teeth. These acids cause damage to the tooth's surface thus producing cavities.

Cavities are caused by bacterial acids from sugar causing the enamel to dissolve. The tooth's structure is damaged as a result. If treatment is delayed intense pain can be caused. Decay and falling out of teeth can occur due to cavities.

Halitosis is caused by food caught between teeth. If teeth are not well cleaned, the food degrades and causes bad breath. This can affect the person's social and personal life. As a result they can have low self worth.

Periodontal is loss of bone around the teeth. It is a result of advanced gingivitis. It leads to loosening of teeth and eventual teeth loss if not treated.

Several things we consume may stain our teeth. These include smoking, coffee and sodas. A dentist can be consulted to find out what caused the stains and offer treatment.

Some people grind and clench their teeth unknowingly when they are asleep. Stress or teeth that are not well aligned may cause teeth grinding. Grinding can break teeth, destroy the enamel or cause jaw and muscle problems.

Most of these teeth diseases can be prevented by brushing teeth after breakfast and before going to bed. Use of toothpaste, dental floss and mouth wash can help to prevent these problems. Most of these diseases can be treated. Visiting a dentist regularly is also a good idea.
