Teeth Have Always Been A Sign Of Good Health And Prosperity
Teeth whitening treatments were originally developed with the intention for use as compounds for cleaning dentures
. Towards the nineties, they became popular among dentists and professional teeth whitening was introduced to the general public. The products on the market contained some of the active ingredients included in professional procedures, but at lower concentrations.
Historically, whiter teeth have always been a sign of good health and prosperity, and various cultures over time have all used different methods of teeth whitening. The ammonia in urine was considered by the Ancient Romans to be beneficial in terms of removing stains, while the Ancient Egyptians favoured powdered pumice stone, an ingredient which continues to be used in some modern products such as whitening toothpastes. Gervase Markhams The English Housewife, written in 1915, recommends the use of sage and salt as a stain remover a more pleasant alternative to the old barber shops, where a corrosive nitric acid was considered to be a very effective teeth whitening treatment until it was realised that this caused the enamel of the tooth to decay. In the 1880s, there were many bleaching treatments available on the market, all of which had varied success levels. The 1900s saw a bleaching process not too dissimilar to modern zoom teeth whitening Newcastle treatments, where hydrogen peroxide was coupled with a bleaching light, but this required a large number of treatments for it to be effective. In 1989, two dentists, Prof. Van. B. Haywood and Dr. Haywood revolutionised teeth whitening with the introduction of carbamide peroxide as a whitening treatment, resulting in the invention of at-home bleaching trays.
Laser dentistry was originally developed in the 1960s to help solve gum disease. In 1996, the FDA approved the use of argon lasers in laser teeth whitening, which combines light or heat with a bleaching agent. Since then this, has become one of the most popular methods of teeth whitening along with zoom teeth whitening. Zoom teeth whitening treatments work on a similar principle to laser teeth whitening treatments, using heat and light to activate a gel which is painted onto the teeth.
Despite numerous modern advancements in dentistry, tooth staining continues to be a problem which is experienced by many. Despite a reported rise in so-called bleachorexics (Those who bleach their teeth so often as to cause long-term damage to them, often as a result of being bombarded with media images telling them they have a less than perfect smile), tooth staining can be a real problem for some people. Aside from the usual suspects such as staining foods and drinks, not to mention cigarettes, some over-the-counter medicines and antibiotics have been known to cause tooth discolouration, as well as genetics, aging and even having an excess of fluoride, which can cause white spots on the surface of the teeth.
