1) Voicemail. Perhaps this was an easy one for you to guess. Voicemail saves people almost fathomless amounts of time and lost messages. It also saves businesses money--they don't need to have several message takes on staff.

2) "In absentia" greetings. This is a godsend to businesses. If your secretary is on the other line and just can't pick up, or if you or one of your salesmen are, the friendly greeting comes on. These days these greetings can be personalized and customized so that the caller feels like she is getting a message from a human being, even in absentia.

3) "On hold" messages and musical messages. These are further ways of making automated greetings more human-like and personalized. Of course, sometimes the on-hold music can get annoying, so for your business' telephone systems you want to select carefully!

4) Call transferring. An often underappreciated part of a telephone system for a business. Instead of having to have the right person or department call you back after the secretary plays "pass the message (or pass the buck)", when you call a business up that has this feature they can quickly and easily get you over to the right person or place. Then you get to talk to the right person immediately or you get to leave a voicemail. This leaves a significantly more professional impression than "pass the buck".

5) VoIP compatibility. This is perhaps the most important 21st century feature for saving money on the telephone bill, especially the long distance telephone bill. With VoIP you can pay low in-advance monthly fee for unlimited calling (unless you're doing international calling, but even then the rates are quite low).
