Temples of India - Part 3

This article is part third in the series of articles on temples of India. Let us know about two more important Indian temples.

Golden temple - The Golden temple is the place of worship of Sikhs. It is one of the oldest Gurudwaras (temple of Sikhs). It is located in the city of Amritsar in Punjab, India. The temple is also known as Harmandir Sahib. The temple is surrounded by the Amrutsar lake. The temple is constructed with marble sculptures and stones. The whole temple is is coated with a layer of gold and hence the name. The temple is connected with land by a marble bridgeway. The Golden temple is one of the major pilgrimage places of Sikhs and is popular and a much visited place by tourists as well. You can go to Amritsar by air as it connected to Delhi and Srinagar. Trains and buses are also available from the major cities.

Meenakshi Temple - Meenakshi Temple is a Hindu temple. It is an ancient temple located in the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and his wife godess Parvati. It is also known as the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple. The temple was built in the 17th century by the Nayak kings. The temple has around fourteen main towers Which are also known as the Gopurams. According to hindu belief, lord Shiva came on earth as Sunderashwar to marry goddess Parvati in the form of Meenakshi. The Meenakshi Thirukalyanam ie, the divine marriage of Meenakshi is the most popular festival of Madurai which is held in April every year. There are many events celebrated like Chariot festival, Float festival, etc. Apart from this, all other Hindu festivals are also celebrated here. The most important places to see in the temple premises are Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapam, Vasantha Mandapam, The Thousand Pillar Mandapam, Potramaraukulam (golden Lotus tank), Swami Sundareswarar Shrine, Oonjal Mandapam, etc. The temple has over thousand pillars supporting it. The sight is worth a visit. You can go there by air to Madurai city as the temple is just 10 kms away from the city. Trains and buses are also easily available from nearby cities.
