Kerala temple are designed in accordance with the natural resources and climatic condition of the state. Every town of Kerala has at least one or more temples that trace their origins to antiquity. Some of the most revered temples of Kerala are as follows:
Sabarimala temple:
Sabarimala is one of the most pious temple of Kerala, located in Pathanamthitta district. This highly revered temple is dedicated to Sastha (Aiyappan), Hariharanputran and Vishnu-maya. The history of Sabarimala temple is dated back to 4,000 4,250 years old. Devotees has to follow severe austerities and a strenuous trek through the western ghats to visit this temple.
Ambalappuzha temple:
Located in the south of Alappuzha district, Ambalappuzha temple is another outstanding temple of Kerala. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Apart from paying their homage, devotees come here to have the 'Palpayasam' which is offered to the deity during afternoon. It is a kind of milk porridge. Every year on the ninth day of annual festival which is celebrated in the malayalam month of Meenam, a grand feast is conducted by the temple management.
Guruvayoor temple: Guruvayoor temple is one of the most sacred and important pilgrimage destination in Kerala. It is said to be believed that the temple was created by 'Guru', the 'precepator of the Gods' and the 'Vayu' the 'god of winds'. There are also shrines to Ganapathy, Sree Ayyappa and Edathedathy Kavil Bhagawati.
Chottanikkara temple:
Chottanikkara temple is built nearby the city of Ernakulam. Goddess Rajarajeshwari is the presiding deity of the temple who is worshipped along with lord Vishnu, and together are referred as Lakshminarayana. This temple is very unique. Here, Goddess Rajarajeshwari is worshipped in three different forms. In the morning, she is worshipped as Goddess Saraswati, draped in white sari, than Goddess Bhadrakali at noon draped in crimson color sari and as Durga in the evening decked in blue. The devotees who suffers from mental illness comes here to cure their disease by the grace of Goddess.
Other famous temples of the state are Padmanabha Swami Temple, Sivagiri Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruvalla Temple, Mannarshala Temple and many more temples.
