Ten Answers to a Question Some Never Think to Ask: "Why Do Dogs Eat Poop
?"
Dog owners will agree with me that it is not that easy to raise a dog. I think it compares very closely with raising a child. Dogs, like children, need love, time and attention. A few things that money can't buy. It's also true that dogs can drive you out of your mind, especially when you are still in the early stages of training them. When my dog was a puppy, I had to buy new pairs of socks every week. He couldn't stop chewing on them. It was either my socks or my pants. But no matter what I did to scold my dog, he just gave me his best puppy dog eyes, and my heart would melt, just like that. When he got a little bit bigger, his standards got a little bit higher, so he picked my cell phone as his new favorite toy.
Just like little children you have to be patient with them. I believe that all the love that you give your canine friend is given to you three fold in return. Sad to say, just like people, dogs too have their own share of ailments. You might be surprised to find out that they also have their own kind of eating disorders. To name a few these are pica (eating of non-food material), psychogenic water drinking (consuming more water than necessary for regular daily use), anorexia (starvation to the point of extreme, and deadly weight loss), and gorging (serious, unhealthy overeating).
I think you might also be surprised to learn that, when dogs eat poop, it is also classified as an eating disorder known as coprophagia. To explain it further, coprophagia is the ingestion of poop that is deliberate and habitual. There are a lot of reasons why dogs eat poop and I've rounded up ten answers I hope will help.
#1 Dogs eat poop because they want to get your attention. You might not be giving them the love and attention they crave, so just to let you know how they feel, they eat their own poop. Their intentions are not to drive you mad, but for you to notice them. Even if, well, it is kind of gross.
#2 Dogs eat poop to "belong". You might not know it, but dogs suffer from peer pressure too. If they see other dogs eating poop, to them in order to be accepted, they must do what most of the other dogs do. Especially when it is done by the Alpha dog or the coolest dog in the group. Nobody wants to be the underdog, so poop eating it is!
#3 Dogs eat poop to hide evidence. Most understand that if they hide the evidence, they will not be punished. They know they will be reprimanded for their mistake, so why not get rid of the mistake? See, dogs are smart!
#4 Dogs eat poop because they are bored. There is nothing else to do; I've chewed on everything else, so why not eat poop? Seems to be the logical progression right?
#5 Dogs eat poop because they are carrying a gene that makes them eat poop. So, don't blame yourself because some dogs are just born to eat poop. Having a genetic poop-eater is something that some of us are simply blessed with.
#6 Some dogs eat poop because it resembles dog food, and they wouldn't want to waste the money you spend on dog food and they eat it. See how nice they are, trying to save you a buck or two?
#7 Dogs eat poop because they are lonely and they are craving your love. If we humans can engage in binge eating when we are depressed, our lonely dogs do the same also by having a dog poop binge. See the similarities? They are certainly plain as day to me.
#8 Dogs eat poop because it tastes good. Some dogs regard eating poop as a wonderful gustatory experience. Who are we to deny them this simple pleasure when we eat things like bugs and brains?
#9 There are dogs that are keen on keeping their environment clean. When these dogs eat their poop, it's just like cleaning the house or their own space.
#10 Dogs eat poop because they may not be getting the proper nutrition they need. They eat poop as a substitute or supplement for food. If your dog is so hungry that they have taken to eating poop, it might be time to up their feeding.
