Ten Must See Attractions From Your Holiday Home In York

York Minister

York Minister

Probably Yorks most famous landmark and attracts visitor to York from all over the world to see this incredible cathedral. It started out a small stone church which replaced the previous wooden structure. Its origins go back to the 7th Century when it first began and was built for the baptism of the Anglo Saxon King, Edwin of Northumbria. Over the centuries it has been added to and gone through two major fires and bombings.

The restoration for the Minster is on-going which will always be the case, and the Great East Window which is the world's largest example of medieval stained glass suffered severe damage in the last fire in 1984 this has now been fully restored to its former glory and is a magnificent sight to see.

Shambles

High on the list of places to visit in York is the Shambles which is a one of the best preserved medieval streets globally. It is a street in the heart of York city centre and is a narrow cobbled street which in medieval days was a street where locals would go to buy their meat form the street of butcher shops.

It is a narrow street and some properties opposite each other it"s possible to touch the other one. It is a now probably one of the busiest streets in York and full of souvenir shops, restaurants and cafs.

Bar Walls

The city centre of York is surrounded by the Roman walls and is the most complete walls of this type in England. The Walls themselves are an ideal place to view the city as you can walk the whole perimeter most of the time depending on restoration. To walk the full length it can take approximately two to three hours and the distance is just over two miles in length. It can take a lot longer to walk round though as there are so many sites and exceptional views to see whilst on them.

In spring it is one of the most attractive sites to see in York when all the daffodils which are planted around every section of the walls grass banks are in full bloom. It is still a free attraction to enjoy for everyone.

York Castle Museum

York Castle Museum must be the best or at least one of the best of its type, it is a journey through the history of York and is a place that even if you are not a history lover you will enjoy as it is displayed in a way to involve you and make you feel a part of history as you step back in time. From the recreation of the Victorian Street to walk down and enter all the authentic shops as they would have been, to the prison which once housed the infamous Dick Turpin.

It is easily a place where you could spend the whole day or more as each vist you can discover something new.

Jorvik Centre

This is a unique and one of the most exciting and popular places to visit and in the height of the season expect to queue for a long time. The wait though is definitely worth it as it really is mesmerising once onside, it takes you on a journey around the Viking settlement of York as it was.

You are actually taken back a thousand years to the city of York as it used to be in Viking times. The archaeological discovery made, came about when a council proposed redevelopment in the Coppergate area of York came to a halt when the discovery of a hidden city was discovered and for the next 5 years Archaeologists completed the dig and restoration of the old York Viking settlement. You can are now taken on a journey to see the restored houses and streets and how life was living at this time it certainly doesn"t feature any of the Luxury Hotels in York now but shows you how different and hard times were. Your journey takes place as you sit and enjoy commentary which includes smells and noises of the time on a time capsule to give you this unique experience.

York Dungeon

The York Dungeon is a journey back in time and has all the very worst of life back in the days of torture disease and heinous crimes around York and feature some of its most infamous former citizens such as Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin. A visit here is not for young children as it is quite gory but it is cleverly done with actors creating a scary journey. It is not the same as the Castle Museum by a long way and more fun and shocks than historical discovery but well worth a visit.

Treasurer's House

This is situated close to the York Minster and is one of the National Trust Houses.

It dates back over 2,000 years, from the Roman times right through up until Edwardian times as you wander around the houses vast collection of artefacts of the times form the original furniture, paintings and ceramics. It is set in a lovely quite walled garden and is the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea in its traditional tearooms.

It is also featured heavily in the many ghost walks which happen around the city a place well worth a visit especially for those who take their history seriously.

National Railway Museum

Even if you are not a Railway enthusiast most would find this an interesting and enjoyable place to visit for all ages, where you cannot just see the locomotives of the times but feel and touch many and get a feeling of history. It has a large collection of over 100 locomotives going back over 300 years.

It is not just a collection of trains though, it has details and displays on everything connected with them from the posters of the times, furniture, waiting rooms and what life was like on the Railways. A good place to visit and very easily spend a full day there, it is also free admission.

Castle Howard

The house made famous in recent times for the original production of Brideshead Revisited. It is though much more than a setting for a drama series. It has recently been voted one of the World"s top ten great Mansions it is a splendid 18th-century residence set within 1,000 acres of stunning picturesque countryside on the outskirts of York in the Howardian Hills.

As well as a visit in the house itself the grounds offer plenty of other attractions, from the courtyard and authentic shops where you can buy fresh organic meat where you can take back and barbeque at your holiday home in York. It also has a garden centre and large lawned gardens to sit and enjoy a picnic. A change from the city centre and should definitely be on the list to enjoy your holiday in York.

Eden Camp

The Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum to give it its official title at first thought doesn"t always appear appealing as some of the other attractions. The reality though is that most who do visit are pleasantly surprised how good it is and is an absolute must visit for all ages.

The place was originally a prisoner of war camp and the building have all been kept in their original state, it would not be recommend as one of the best places to stay in York for your holiday though but stick to the more traditional holiday accommodation in York.

It has displays of the history not just the military items it houses but offers a real insight into how it was to live and the social aspects of the times. The place is a great way to educate in a enjoyable and fun way and is a place to spend the full day with children"s play areas and caf. It is a much undervalued York attraction but actually one of its best. To get there it is on the outskirts of York passed Castle Howard
