Ten Questions You Should Ask Your Printer
Don't bother asking twenty ..
Don't bother asking twenty ... here are the ten most important things to know about prospective Melbourne printing services.
There are a LOT of printers to be found nowadays. Even in a limited area like Melbourne, you have access to literally hundreds of different Melbourne printing services. While most are reputable, very few will suit your particular needs. How do you determine which quote will end up delivering you the best marketing materials, posters, displays or doo-dads? It has little to do with their ultimate price ... but the 10 questions below will help you determine it with confidence.
1. Do you have any samples?
A picture (or in this case, any piece of printed material!) is worth a thousand words. Ask for some samples from your printer of the type of job you are having done - brochure, poster, fridge magnet, etc. This is a good way to compare different companies.
2. Do you specialise in a specific type of job?
Some printers specialise in large format printing, some in printing on materials other than paper, some in digital and some in screen printing. If your Melbourne printing service specialises in the type of job that you want done, you're more likely to get great quality at reasonable prices. Note that it is possible for printers (especially large printing services in Melbourne) to specialise in several types of job!
3. What is your proofing procedure?
An in-house proofing procedure is the mark of a well run printing service.
4. Can I review the proofs?
Sometimes you'll pick up on design changes you want made after seeing your work on paper; the screen doesn't always accurately represent reality. Though it will sometimes cost extra, a good printing service in Melbourne will let you see a proof before the entire job is printed.
5. What file types can you accept?
Some printing services are quite restricted in the type of files they will accept ... and if you can only work in MS Publisher, you may have a problem! It is best to ask first.
6. What will the turnaround time be ... and what is your usual turnaround time?
This will be important to know for this particular job. If you're looking for a long term printing partner, you'll also want to know the 'ordinary', non-rush, turnaround time.
7. What is the largest size you can print?
If you'll want large posters or displays printed, this is important to know. Most printing services in Melbourne will flag it at the quote stage if they can't print your size. However, even for small paper-size jobs, this is good to know for future reference.
8. Can I pick up my job in person?
This allows you to both cut out postage charges, and also get a sense of how professional your Melbourne printing service is through checking out the premises in person.
9. Do you perform finishing work in-house, or outsource it?
Some Melbourne printing services outsource binding, foil stamping, die cutting or folding. There's not necessarily an advantage or disadvantage either way - but sometimes you'll want to know who you're dealing with!
10. What payment methods do you accept?
A minor matter, but one which can impact your long term satisfaction if you're looking for a regular printing partner.
