Ten Steps To Help Improve Your Singing Voice
Want a a few tips to improve your voice? Here are Ten tips to guide you reach your potential!
1. Use your diaphragm when breathing, not the lungs. It is necessary that you control the air that you're expelling when you sing, and breathing from the diaphragm allows you to have more air to work with. To accomplish this, breathe so that your stomach goes out rather than your chest when you take in air. When you practice, be sure to focus on using the same amount of air for low notes and high notes. This will help take away the break between your registers and give you a steadier tone.
2. practice-a lot. This would be just like a guitar, and the human voice is less precise than a guitar. It is a must to get your sense of pitch down, and you need to train your voice to reach higher and higher if you want to really be precise with all the notes in your range.
3. Don't strain your voice. Practice is fine, but don't try to sing too high or you might badly affect your voice box. Do it slowly and continuously and you'll sing well in no time. Start with one hour practice per day,l and extend if you are more comfortable. If you ever feel like your voice has had too much, or if you feel soreness or pain, stop right away.
4. Take the advice of others. Singing well takes a while, and in the meantime you're going to hear people say a lot of negative comments about you. If you notice a trend, recognize that people are probably making a good judgment and try to work on the problem aspect of your voice. Never allow anyone to belittle you who really doesn't have anything to say other than, "you suck," though. You don't see them trying to do this, and they are clueless as to what they're talking about.
5. Record your voice when you sing. This is the only way to hear your problems, because you can separate yourself from your voice and listen to your voice as other people hear you. You may not like this in the beginning, but just go on; you'll improve vastly, and you'll start to hear stuff you like about your voice and really improve on those things.
6. Talk to established singers. Most of them will be eager to give you some tips and exercises that helped them out, and whenever you need to ask for directions, the wise thing to do is to ask the person that's already there.
7. Eat good food and take a lot of fluids. Don't do anything that could dry out your voice and stop you from singing well. Caffeine is not good, as is anything that causes mucous to be sticky like dairy products (milk in particular is a very bad choice). Don't smoke or drink too much; this can really make you sing poorly. One famous case of booze and cigarettes ruining a classic voice is Harry Nilsson, who shred his larynx while doing his his "Pussycats" album with John Lennon and ended up carrying a bucket with him to spit blood into during the recording session. His awesome voice gradually became better and sounded great, but he never sang in the same way again; his highest register was forever destroyed.
8. Whatever the style is, sing it. If you're singing country, listen to country singers; if you're singing rock, listen to rock singers. be particular with things that are the same in each style and emulate those. Take caution, though, to keep your voice your signature, and not to simply imitate another singer's voice. Make your uniqueness come out in your music.
9. Try out different sounds. Certain noises, like a really nasal note, can help you your range if you practice with them. Ask singers for their suggestions, and take them up on it.
10. Finally, stay positive! If you've had some bad scales, that doesn't mean your voice is will not work out well all day. Drink some warm tea and try again. Don't be depressed, and don't think that your voice is bad, if you do, it certainly will be. I know how lame that sounds, but how you set your mind is definitely a big part of singing, and if you don't think you sound good, no one else will either.
If you are a social singer or someone looking for a career using their voice a little training can be good for you. Online learn to sing software is better then ever and would be a great help for you to get started right away!
