9.Stick to what you know best/Up to date information
10.Be disiplined; not every day is a betting day
1.Never bet more than you can afford.
This is often repeated advice but really worth taking note of.
Betting is for disposable income, money you can afford to use(lose) over and beyond houseold or living requirements. This is sound advice because attempting to bet under pressure i.e. with money you cannot afford to lose, is the most certain route to poverty and serious personal problems.
2.Keep a log of every bet made.
This is one of the most important things you must do. Professional punters note everything and if you want to be successful then you have to make an effort to do the same. All punters have a habit of remembering their winning bets while convientiently forgetting those that lost.
Keep a written log/diary or use your computer to set up a spread sheet or just use Word which ever suits you best. Keeping a log will show you clearly if you are winning or losing.
The log should look similar to this
Date,Event, Selection, Odds, Stake, Back,
Lay,,Result,Profit,Loss,Balance
This way you cannot get away from the final column which shows if you are in profit or losing. Do not be tempted to remove losing bets, every bet must be written in otherwise you are just fooling yourself and making the bookie richer.
3.Never chase your losses.
No punter professional or amateur is going to have winning bets all the time. Losing days are part and parcel of betting. The most important lesson to learn when you are on a losing streak, is to stay away from betting on the next race or event in an effort to gain back the money you have lost. If you have a system stay with it, do not bet on something that;
A. Does not fall within your normal betting pattern
B. Bet at higher odds than normal in an effort to get your funds back in one go it is just not going to work betting under pressure is a certain way to failure.
It is possible for a small percentage of people to make a living and indeed a good one from betting but it takes dedication, determination and a professional attitude to have any chance.
4.Do not bet on an event just to have an interest.
With so much sport on television it is possible to bet 24 hours a day, horse racing in the UK and Ireland followed by meetings in the USA and Australia. Football games from all corners of the world, it is too easy to become distracted and start betting simply because you are watching something and think I might as well have a bet on it since I am watching it.
This is the same as a shopper impulse buying, and usually has the same results. The shopper may end up with something they really dont want or need but they at least get the item, backing impulsively will most often end up in your bank balance going down with nothing to show for it.
Interest or impulsive gambling are betting sins. Do not commit them.
5.Use you head not your heart when betting.
Can you remain detatched when placing a bet?
If you are a supporter of a football team or a fan of a particular jockey, trainer can you bet against them that is
lay them.
Betting with your heart is dangerous to your bank balance. Just because you are a die hard supporter of a team, you have to be capable of betting against them-even if it means relagation, going out of the cup etc. If you cannot do that you must at least be capable of leaving the event alone as a betting prospect. Desperatly wanting something to happen does not mean that it automatically will.Stay detatched.
6.Always seek the best price to bet at or lowest if
lay.
This is often time dependent. Prices change from when an event is first priced up, to when it starts,and many times right throughout now we have in running betting.
As a rule of thumb,
Early morning prices are better if backing a horse;
Laying a horse is usually better done closer to the event or in running.
This rule holds true for many but not all events, so do your home work.
7.Seek as much information on the event you wish to bet on.
Before betting make sure you have as much up to the minute information as possible. Football team news, change in the going at a race course, weather conditions for cricket, fast or slow courts in tennis etc.
Information is readily available by way of the internet; so use it.
If you intend to back or lay a horse some or all of the following could be considered;
Course; Does the horse have a liking for a particular racecourse?
Going; are underfoot conditions suitable to your horse, is it better on allweather or turf?
Distance;Is the distance of the race right for your horse?
Righthanded/
Lefthanded; Does the horse have a preference running left or right?
Jockey;Does the jockey have a good or bad record when riding the horse or that particular type of race?
Trainer; Is the trainer going through a good or bad patch with runners and is he/she good at placing horses?
Favourites;Do favourites have a good or bad record in the race and will this affect your horse?
Betting;Does the betting market have confidence or lack of confidence in your horse? Remember bookies do make mistakes with prices but as professionals they are going to shorten the prices of the horses they consider will cost them money.
Travel;How far has the animal had to travel and does it travel well?
You do not need an exhaustive list of information and the above is not exhaustive but you do need enough to give you a decent chance of winning.
8.Look for good/bad patterns emerging from your betting.
There is no use keeping a diary or log unless you actually use it. After a two to three months, you should begin to notice various patterns emerging from your betting.
Are you too dependent on favourites, are you trying to win with too many long shots? Take your time to check through your betting log it will be worth it. Identify where bets are going right and where your are going wrong.
As an example, I found that I never made a consistant profit from backing favourites in 5 furlong races but laying the favourite did make a profit.
Keep checking your diary and use the information it gives you; this is how winning systems develop and the next one to emerge could be yours.
9.Stick to what you know best.
If your interest is in horse racing then put your time into learning about it. Find out what the difference is between the different types of races; if you do not know the difference between a Listed race and a Seller then you are going to end up the mug punter the bookies love. Find out why horses are rated differently. If you have no interest in such things, then you should not be involved in betting on horses.
The same applies to soccer, American football, golf, tennis or any other sport you can bet on or lay.
Study pays off and it is easier to study something you like.
10.Be Disciplined; not every day is a betting day.
Waiting for a winning chance however long it takes, is better than going in blindly every day.
