Ten presidential candidates registered in Belarus

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) The Central Election Commission of Belarus has registered ten people as candidates for the Belarus presidency, BelTA has learned.

The candidates are incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko as well as Grigory Kostusev, Aleksei Mikhalevich, Vladimir Nekliaev, Yaroslav Romanchuk, Vitaly Rymashevsky, Andrei Sannikov, Nikolai Statkevich, Viktor Tereshchenko, and Dmitry Uss.

The Central Election Commission has denied registration to Vladimir Provalsky because only 118 signatures he had submitted turned out to be genuine.

At the session of the Central Election Commission of Belarus all the registered candidates were able to submit their applications for the registration of authorized representatives and financial representatives. In line with Belarusian election laws every candidate can register up to 30 authorized representatives.

Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina reminded that after recent amendments to the Election Code, the candidates can nominate representatives to sit on the Central Election Committee in an advisory capacity.

Debate and speeches of the presidential candidates will be broadcast live on radio and television. This decision was taken by the Central Election Commission on November 18.

Live debates of the presidential candidates will allow voters to make an objective opinion about them, Information Minister Oleg Proleskovsky told BelTA.

Pre-recorded debates are the best option for the candidates. "I am sure the presidential candidates should have agreed to pre-recorded debates. A camera is a dangerous thing. Not everyone does well in front of a TV camera. For example, I do not feel comfortable," the minister said.

The Central Election Commission took into consideration the insistent proposal of one of the candidates. "If they want to, they are welcome. May the entire country see their aptitude. This is not a conversation in a friendly atmosphere. This is an argument, a debate. I think the debates will have high ratings," Oleg Proleskovsky said.
