Fundraising is often a difficult task that is a long process and can often be very time consuming. However people often balance their work and personal lives with charitable events included. Here are some tips to get your fundraising started:
Challenge yourself- set up a challenge such as climbing the three peaks, cycling across the country, something that shows determination and courage, people will sponsor you for doing something personally challenging. The bigger the challenge the bigger the donation!
Ask friends and family. Don't forget about all the people who you share your everyday life with. By asking those closest to you, you will probably raise the majority of the money you aim to. An easy way to do this is to set up a Virgin Money Giving account this way you can write a message to potential donator's explaining why you are passionate about the particular charity you care about. Put a link to this on your Facebook, Twitter or any social networking sites, this allows people from all over the world to be able to donate so distance is not an excuse!
Team work- ask friends, family, or colleagues to help you. Working as a team has the benefits of being more fun and takes off the pressure raising money on your own. If doing a group event get some personalised t-shirts with the charity logo on it to look the part and raise awareness of the charity.
Never underestimate how much businesses and companies are willing to offer. You could simply ask the company you work for, or why not try large businesses by sending an email explaining what you are doing and why their company could make a huge difference to the charity you are fundraising for. Try to be personal, you don't want your email or letter to look like spam, so tell them a bit about yourself first, and discuss the charity and then request a donation. If doing so by email remember to include a link to your Virgin Money Giving profile.
Bucket shaking- this can be long and tiresome but is also a very good way of raising money. But remember you can't simply buy a bucket and wander the streets asking passers by for money, you need to contact your local council and request a permit to do this, and the bucket also needs the authorisation code of the charity which is easily accessible by simply ringing the charity and asking for it. Again wear clothing that raises awareness of the charity whilst doing this, otherwise people won't give you a second look!
Organise an event. Charity events are hard work to put together but the end result is often satisfying and worth the effort. Events can include band night (such as battle of the bands), singing competitions (a local X-Factor), bingo, pub quiz's, and during these events you can make and sell cakes on the side, or create a paper quiz and charge a pound for each sheet. For prizes go in and ask local businesses, you will be surprised how friendly and willing they are often giving vouchers or a couple of tickets for local events.
Make a leaflet and go into local businesses and ask if they will sponsor you for a challenging event. This can include coffee shops, or independent stores whereby they can put a charity jar by the till for people to donate any spare change they have.
Make and sell your own products! Soaps, cakes, candles, simple things that are easy to do at home, but you can do them on the cheap and sell them for a small profit to donate to the charity. However whatever item you choose to make, check online the ethical guidelines to selling them.
Sell your old stuff unless you're a huge hoarder there are plenty of belongings that are lying around the house that are probably not used or even looked at these days. Try selling them on e-bay or going to local car-boot sales. These items may not be of use to you but they may be to others.
Lastly, be friendly, honest and polite; always thank people for their donations!
Good luck!!!
