Tennis Atp- Djokovic Steals Swiss Indoors Title From Federer
At number 3 in the world, the Serbian Novak Djokovic ended the three-year reign of
world number 1 Roger Federer in the Swiss player's hometown at Basel. Djokovic routed Federer in the final 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 this past Sunday. With the triumph, the Serbian adds his fourth title of the year and ends Federer's run of three straight tournament victories. It took the Serb just two hours and ten minutes to tumble Federer"s supremacy in Basel, where Federer had won in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In fact, the last time Federer had been defeated in Basel was way back when in 2003.
With the victory, the world No.3 completed his fifth win in fourteen clashes with the Swiss player.
Now, after the tournament, the Serbian is focusing on taking the world No. 2 position in the final stretch of the season. The spot is currently held by the Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Djokovic needs only continue his success this year; he added four titles to his career fifteen with Beijing, Dubai, Belgrade, and of course Basel.
In his hometown, Federer began the match the clear favorite, enjoying the cheering of his fans in the crowd. Djokovic, on the other hand, had to rely on an inner motivation. The result: an exquisite first set. The tennis demonstrated by both players was incredible, taking 10 games. Federer had saved six set points but Djokovic had five break points to wrap the first set in his favor, 6-4.
Entering the second set, Djokovic broke Federer's serve in the second game, but the Swiss broke back in the fourth with baseline play. Federer broke again and Djokovic committed a double fault, giving the second set to the top seed at 6-4.
In the third set, Federer seemed to fall apart. He lost his serve twice and, despite a tremendous effort at the end, the player lost three decisive points in the sixth game, giving the win to Djokovic at 6-2.
After the match, Federer expressed his disappointment at losing a home tournament but gave credit to Djokovic, who played hard throughout the whole match.
"It's disappointing to lose at home in the finals, no doubt. I thought I missed plenty of opportunities. I'm not looking for excuses. He played tough and he played well when he had to, and saved a ton of break points that were crucial. I think I could have played a bit better from the baseline, a bit more aggressively. I was maybe lacking a bit of timing on my backhand side, but it was still a good tournament for me," stated the world No.1.
On the other hand, Djokovic said that for him this was the best win he had had against Federer, as well as the longest match he had ever played. He was, unsurprisingly, happy to take his fourth title of the year at Basel.
"I played by far my best match. It came at the right time. It may be the longest I have ever played in my life. It was maybe the turning point in the whole match. I was fortunate to keep my nerves," said the Serbian.
