After a long losing streak, Rafael Nadal finally won a title, the first of the season. The win comes as preparation for the years major tournaments, beginning with the Australian Open in the second week of January, an event that will gather together the most elite tennis players. Nadal finally defeated Robin Soderling after two losses against the Swede. The match was close and difficult for both players. Although Nadal won with two straight sets, the first set had to be decided on a tie break, while the second one was close as well, ending with a score of 7-6 (3), 7-5 for the final of the season-opening Capitala exhibition tournament. The tournament semifinals were full of surprises, the largest of which involved Roger Rederers ouster by Soderling for the first time in 13 matches. The fans dreams of seeing a Nadal vs. Federer final were dashed; Soderling took Federer 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in the semifinals in a deeply contested match. Each player held serve in the first two sets before Soderling broke the Swiss player in the third and seventh games of the third set to earn his first victory against the world No. 1. Federer had a difficult season starter against Soderling, of whom he said, Obviously its hard to start playing against him, but I had fun. Federer took the tournament as preparation for Doha and the Australian Open, aiming for the title that he missed last year to Nadal in the final. The other match in the semifinals, Nadal against David Ferrer, saw the world No. 2 win 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The game seemed challenging to both Spaniards, who played together in the Davis Cup finals last month. In the end, however, Nadal was able to prove the return of his abilities, sealing his spot for the final. A final against Soderling must have been what Nadal had been dreaming of, since his defeat at the Swedes hands in the last two matches. In the first set, Soderling pushed Nadal to a tiebreak that gave the Spaniard the win. The second set seemed the only hope for the Swede, who was clearly hoping to reverse the results of the first set. Soderling appeared to have a chance until Nadal broke Soderlings serve in the sixth game, giving the Spaniard the match. Nadal viewed the tournament, which was only an exhibition, as great preparation for both the Australian Open and the Doha tournament. He seemed determined to take the season one game at a time. "Everybody wants the No. 1 ranking, but, believe me, for me it is not my goal for this year," the Spaniard said. "To play competitively throughout and win as many tournaments as I can, that is my goal. To be happy playing, to be healthy and to play like I have played over the last two days." Nadal, along with Federer and Soderling, will be participating next week at the Qatar Open in Doha; then he will head to the Australian Open to defend his title and lastly to the Netherlands, in Rotterdam, before he can take a break.
