Tens Machine- An Overview
Technology has helped us to make many impossible things possible
. We do things that couldnt even be imagined a few decades ago. Technology has made tremendous changes in the health industry also. By better medical techniques life expectancy has been increased and so as the overall health of people. Pain killing drugs were the only way to counter pain for centuries. Many other methods has been invented to irradiate pain, one such is the TENS which is the acronym of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. TENS can be said as a Drug free method for providing pain Relief. Many types of joint and muscle problem can be treated by using the TENS. TENS can be said as one of the best way to counter pain. Discoveries relating to physiological mechanisms of pain control have led into many amazing techniques for pain control.
TENS is simply the use of electric current for the stimulation of nerves for therapeutic purposes. The device will emit specific amount of electric current by two electrode attached to the skin. Portable stimulators are used sometimes for this purpose.
The history of killing pain goes back to centuries. Romans were the first to use this technique. According to writings by Scribonius Largus by standing on an electrical fish in the sea shore would relieve pain. The nest millennia showed not much improvement in this technique. It was towards the 16th century headaches and various types of pain were treated by using electrostatic methods. Benjamin Franklin one of the greatest inventor and the founding fathers of United States of America also proposed this method for pain relief. The first notable invention in this field was a device called electreact which was invented in the 19th century. This was the only device which survived into the 20th century. Electreact was not portable and it had some other disadvantages like it had a limited control over stimulus. For these reasons the device was forgotten.
Generally TENS will be capable of modulating the pulse width, intensity and frequency. A high frequency higher than 50Hz will be applied along with a low intensity, mostly below the sensory intensity. The first patent for TENS was taken in the United States of America in the year 1974. It was used to treat the patients having chronic pain. Patients got much relief from this product and soon TENS became popular.
Today there are many companies manufacturing TENS. There are devices in which TENS and EMS are found together. EMS is a device similar to TENS but EMS which is the acronym of Electro muscle stimulation is used for stimulating muscles.
There are many websites selling TENS. While buying TENS we should always consult a doctor. Improper use of TENS can cause adverse effects so its better to chose wisely.
