Tequila: Premium Brands To Enjoy

Alcohol, like many things, exists on a spectrum of quality and value

. While there are the popular mass-made brands that most people will try in their lifetime, there are also higher-end trade names that are suited only for a special occasion, which may set you back about $100 or more per bottle. But above and beyond that are the brands and vintages that are crafted with such care and made so rarely that their prices skyrocket into World Record territory. If you're a lover of tequila and on the hunt for a truly special vintage, here are five of the most expensive bottles of the agave liquor in the world.

Ultra Premium Tequila Ley .925 Pasion Azteca

This 100% blue agave liquor is the Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive tequila ever sold: $225,000 USD. Hand forged gold and platinum comprises the bottle; formulated from a top secret recipe, the alcohol is triple distilled, unlike most other brands that are only distilled twice, and is aged in barrels. Fewer than 40 bottles exist in the entire world, each hand designed and produced.

1800 Coleccion

The 1800 Tequila brand is owned by the Beckmann family, who also own and distribute Jose Cuervo. They release a number of different varieties, including 1800 Silver, Reposado, Anejo, and Millenio, each produced in different barrels and aged for different periods of time. Each year they release 1800 Coleccion, a blend of differently aged agaves which has been aged in French Oak barrels. It comes in a specially designed decanter made of pewter, and sells for approximately $1800 U.S.

Asombroso Reserva del Porto

This tequila is unique in a number of ways. Aged in French Oak barrels for five years, it is actually made from 100% blue agave. Then it is moved into vintage casks that previously housed port wine, imported from Portugal, where it rests for an extra year. This extra step imparts a unique taste to the final product, and has won many awards since its release. It also comes in a hand-blown Italian decanter with a crystal stopper, and each bottle is signed and dated. It retails for $1100 US.

Gran Patron Platinum

This bottle is the least expensive out of many 'top ten' lists for tequila. Five varieties of 100% blue agave liquor are sold by the Patron distillery, a luxury brand that was started in 1989: Silver, Anego, Reposado, Gran Patron Burdeos, and Gran Patron Platinum. This last type is routinely sold for $250 US; it comes in glass bottles that are hand-blown. With it's smooth buttery finish, it's very popular amongst connoisseurs in the United States.

Don Julio Real

The Don Julio brand has the second largest market share in Mexico and fourth largest in the US, founded in 1942. Only 17 when he began producing and distilling the liquor, Don Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada, is the founder. It was the first luxury brand in the world, earning an early reputation for excellence and superior taste. The 'Real' variety is aged in white oak casks, and will sell for $350 per bottle.
