Term Papers And Writing To The Audience
Term papers are among the most frustrating and tedious things that high school and college students have to do in their time at school
. They fuss and moan over the assignments as though it is the hardest thing they will ever have to do. The truth is, term papers are not that tough to ace if you know some simple tricks of the trade. One of these tips is all about the audience you are writing for. Being aware of the audience can make or break your term papers, and fortunately it is rather easy to learn how.
The first thing you have to do is decide what your term paper is going to be about. There are many things that a student will think about when they come up with term paper ideas, but he or she rarely includes who will be grading the paper on the list. This is a huge mistake and you are letting a prime grading boost slide right on by. Let me explain what I mean.
Bobby has a term paper that is assigned by his English teacher. He is told that the paper can be on any subject that strikes his fancy. Bobby ends up choosing a paper on the life cycles of the butterfly. Bobby gets a B on his term paper.
Sally also gets assigned the same task by the same teacher. Sally writes a paper on the symbolism in Moby Dick. The papers are largely the same as far as execution but Sally gets and A. Why do you think that is? That is right. Sally wrote to her audience.
While it may not be fair to do this, teachers do it all the time. A study was put out a few years ago that proved that teachers are naturally inclined to grade papers higher when the subject matter interests them. Who can blame them? Most of us would likely react the same.
There are other advantages to writing your term papers to your audience as well. For one, you are letting that teacher know that their teaching methods have stirred within you a passion for what they teach. This can extend the time working with the teacher and a good teacher student relationship over the long haul. Believe me when I say this bodes well for you in the future. Term papers are only part of your grade, but the overall scores are even more important.
Sometimes teachers have you write papers that are specific in scope. They may even have you write to a specific title. This is a bit more difficult, but you can still write to your audience. You have likely been sitting in her class and listened to his or her lessons. You know their views. Keep in mind that disagreeing can be a great thing, but with proper research to back up your claims. Many students will throw out ideas or opinions and forget that a term paper is a fact finding mission.
If you write to your audience and take your time, your grades on term papers will begin to rise over time. You will learn more tricks of the trade and find yourself loaded with term paper grades that even a college professor would be proud of.
